How long are hedgehogs' nails supposed to be? My hedgie, Ryan, has very long nails, but the quick goes almost all the way to the end. I trimmed them just a tiny bit and one started bleeding, so I stopped. They just look so long to me, but I'm wondering if they're just supposed to be that way. Thank you!

well I guess their nails differ if you are cutting quick than obviously they are not needing to be cut. How old is your hedgehog? Do you know if your hedgie had his nails cut before coming to you? When I got my rescue dog he had very long nails (still does) because they were never trimmed and the quick grew to the end of the nail making it impossible to cut them. That is what the vet told us.

Thank you! He's about a year old. The woman I got him from didn't mention ever cutting them, but they were long when I got him, so maybe that's what happened. They don't cause him any problems unless he's walking on carpet, then they tend to get caught. Anyways, thank you again.

Yeah-you are doing the right thing by trimming a tiny bit. When the nails are not trimmed, like it sounds like his weren't, then the quick grows too. You want to trim a little off the nails every week or so to get them shorter and eventually you will get to a better length for both the nails and the quick. Its sort of frustrating because it does take awhile.

Good to know. My hedgie's front nails are 'normal', but his rear ones, especially the ones toward the inside, are freaking talons! And yeah, the quick goes almost all the way to the end, making them hard to trim without blood.  |

I like to give Herisson a massage until he is relaxed and goes into "Superman pose" on my lap & then file his nails down with a baby file. He seems to like it.  |

Wow I'm just happy that Oy is getting comfortable enough to crawl up my shoulder. I can't wait till I can get her to where she will let me massage her, maybe even cut her nails.
