confused about food. 10 Months, 1 Week ago
I'm pretty new to ownign a hedgehog and have so far been feeding him a formulated hedgehog chow called "Hedgehog diet", made by the comapny eight in one pet products.

I'll be switching him to cat food once I find a good mix, but am wondering if anyone has heard of this food and if it is bad for him?
It's 30% protein and only 8% fat, but i'm not sure which food fillers i should avoid.

Also, how often is it alright to feed him crickets? I've read some sources that tell me they can be the majority of his diet, and others that tell me they're too fatty to be used as more than a treat. Comments appreciated.

Its not the best but its not the worst either. I would not use it alone but as part of a mix it could be ok. Look on the food threads here and the food articles to your left and then once you have an idea, see what is available in your area.

Get him established on whatever base diet you decide on first and then introduce the crickets.
Some hedgehogs can be stubborn about food and may not eat their food if you give them too many treats (like lots of other animals)

When selecting a food for any pet it is so important to read the ingredients list. If there is any kind of corn product in it at all stay away from it. I would also stay away from the bigger companies too. I've never seen a commercial on tv for a pet food that I would consider even 'acceptable.' Feel free to message me back on brand questions. I personally use Innova Low Fat cat food.

Max,

I agree with you for some animals. Hedgehogs are quite contrary to the rules when it comes to diet. They THRIVE on the mid range and lower quality foods. High quality foods cause health problems, and shortened life spans.
