Cotton Twill? 1 Month, 1 Week ago
Hey guys,
I'm not new to this website, altough this is my first post.

I'm getting Kipper the hedgehog in 2 weeks from Ann, and I normally ask her questions, but since this is about fleece bedding (she doesn't use fleece), I figured I'd ask you guys.

I have all my cage supplies ready (just wanting in mail for my wheel and snuggle sack), and I just got some bedding from a materials store:
A bunch of polar fleece and Cotton Twill.

From reading all the forums, if you're getting fleece, get a layer underneath of something absorbent. Unfortunatly, I couldn't really find exactly what type of absornent layer should be used (name wise).

So I asked the employee "What material is absorbant and doesn't have any loose strings hanging out?"
He suggested "Cotton Twill", and that's what I ended up getting along with the polar fleece.

Is "Cotton Twill" o.k for hedgehogs? Just making sure, because it seems fine (I was planning on sewing it underneath the polar fleece).

Here's some more questions while I'm at it:

I know you should put your own used shirt in the cage for the first couple of days while you have the hedgehog, but what else should you do the first couple days you have the hedgehog?

And are the poop and pee smelly? (My Dad really wants to know)

Thanks,

Jordan

Congrats on your new baby hedgie. I love using fleece liners. I own 4 hedgies right now and use fleece on all of them. I just sew together 2 pieces of fleece which absorbs everything but I do change the liners daily. If you change them daily than I feel like there is no smell. Hedgies are night owls and so the first thing I do when I wake up is change the liners. I will admit the first second I wake up I smell them but they are changed quick and no more smell. I feel like if you get in a good routine of changing them in the AM then you should be fine. I guess cotton for the back would be fine, mine like to also go under the liners or thats why I like fleece on both sides. Putting a shirt you wore in the cage is a great idea to get them use to you, each hedgie is different and some may take more time than other, good luck
