Nail Clipping Training.... - 2007/07/14 23:56 Okay, so I didn't want to post this until I proved my theory true....but I've trained Pepper to like nail clipping time!!! Yeah me! This was the only bad part of having him for a pet, as unfortunately he doesn't like it and does like to bite when he is upset. I found a few months ago, that if I flipped him on his back and waited for him to uncurl slowly I could grab his little foot and trim one painfully slow nail a day, then rewarded him with a very small treat (one nail at a time = small treat) but he never got the hint that he would get a treat, so the next time he put up a fight....Well I slowly trained him a couple of times a week (while playing)....I flip him over and grab his foot and play around with it (doesn't have to be trimming but just touching his foot) then I do that with all 4 legs....once he lets me do that he gets a curd of cottage cheese....flip him over and play with his feet....get a treat....NOW....I can trim his nails without a fight whenever I want....Maybe this will help other new hedgie owners who have to fight with their little guys too!

Re:Nail Clipping Training.... - 2007/07/15 20:06 So i have started doing this tonight.... I am hoping to make nail trimming time a bit easier. Digit gets very fussy when I trim her nails and will even bite sometimes too, and she never bites on a normal basis. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=106956777

Re:Nail Clipping Training.... - 2007/07/15 21:17 Good luck! I hope it works for you too! Remember to try and play with each foot before giving a treat and repeat playing with feet again! I tried just doing it once with each foot, but he never got the clue....but found that after a couple of sessions each evening he really started warming up to the idea... I hope it helps. I tried the whole tub idea...turns out that I have a hedgie that after a minute or two actually likes swimming....Doh!

Re:Nail Clipping Training.... - 2007/07/19 20:39 So I have been doing this for abouto a week now! Digit seems to be slowly warming up to the idea of having her feet touched. I will report later on how the actual nail clipping is going! http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=106956777

Re:Nail Clipping Training.... - 2007/07/19 20:53 We have been unsuccessful in trimming P-k's nails so tomorrow we take her to a local animal groomer who has experience doing chinchilla's nails. As I may have mentioned in other posts, ours was the fourth home P-k had her first six months so she came to us with behavioral problems. She absolutely hates to be held and bites, magnify that with nail trimming. Oh I am so not looking forward to this

Re:Nail Clipping Training.... - 2007/07/20 13:46 we just returned from our pedicure and she was wonderful (actually I don't think she was fully awake). John held her and the guy quickly clipped her nails, she balled up and the hind legs were a challenge but I had brought a chamois cloth with a small hole in it to pull her foot through and it did the trick. The groomer charged $5, a whole lot cheaper than a trip to the vets. P-k was given two worms afterwards as a reward. And we learned an important lesson... no worms before a car trip home for she got car sick.

Re:Nail Clipping Training.... - 2007/08/05 00:06 So the nail clipping training actually works! I think that my boyfriend and I have been training digit for about a month now and it seems to have paid off. When we brought her into the bathroom to clip her nails she let us hold each one of her feet and do the whole foot without much of a struggle. After the whole process she got a well deserved mealworm, which she was definitly expecting! She actually ate the mealworm too, which is rare because she will usually not eat anything when she is nervous. Thanks for posting this great idea! http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=106956777

Re:Nail Clipping Training.... - 2007/08/05 00:23 Once I get my hedgie I will definitely use this idea. It sounds great! http://www.freewebs.com/wicket61807/index.htm
