Nail Clipping Training.... - 2007/07/14 23:56
Okay, so I didn't want to post this until I proved my theory true....but I've trained Pepper to like nail clipping time!!! Yeah me! This was the only bad part of having him for a pet, as unfortunately he doesn't like it and does like to bite when he is upset. I found a few months ago, that if I flipped him on his back and waited for him to uncurl slowly I could grab his little foot and trim one painfully slow nail a day, then rewarded him with a very small treat (one nail at a time = small treat) but he never got the hint that he would get a treat, so the next time he put up a fight....Well I slowly trained him a couple of times a week (while playing)....I flip him over and grab his foot and play around with it (doesn't have to be trimming but just touching his foot) then I do that with all 4 legs....once he lets me do that he gets a curd of cottage cheese....flip him over and play with his feet....get a treat....NOW....I can trim his nails without a fight whenever I want....Maybe this will help other new hedgie owners who have to fight with their little guys too!
