Good news: Poe likes his new wheel. - 2006/04/09 06:57 Bad news: he's getting poo and (and I think pee, too) all over himself!

He had poopy feet this morning and then when I had him in the bath (his first, just a warm water and olive oil soak for his feet) I saw that his fur was soiled in places too.

I don't think that I'll have a problem with giving Poe a bath every day, but he's developed dry skin (this began a day or two before he got his wheel). Will baths make it worse? :/

Also, how do you dry them? I patted his quills a bit with the blanket (I use a flannel baby blanket for his towel), but he didn't like that. His quills still looked wet when I put him in his cage, wrapped up in his blanket. I didn't really know what to do for him though to get him dry :/ He stayed in the blanket for a while and he was on a snuggle safe disc. He's running on his wheel now so I think that he at least didn't get a chill. Whew.

Anyway, thanks everyone. I'm sorry the post was so blathery

Re:Good news: Poe likes his new wheel. - 2006/04/10 04:13 Keeping the wheel clean will help somewhat in keeping the rest of him clean, but yep, the hedgehogs' urge to go to the bathroom while running on the wheel makes for a messy hedgehog. *sigh*
You can stick with foot baths for the majority of the time, I would personally stick with just plain water, just deep enough to soak the poopboots off of his feet.
I don't particularly "dry" my hedgehogs, I just snuggle them in a soft blanket for a bit, and that will usually get the majority of the moisture off fo the skin and quills. Post-bath time is a great time to sit with your hedgehog onyour lap and snuggle for a while.

Re:Good news: Poe likes his new wheel. - 2006/04/10 07:44 Poe was much cleaner today and his skin even looks better!

I'll definately take the opportunity to hold him longer next time his feet need a bath. He was very docile after the bath (well, in the sense that his quills were completely flat), but I felt bad for putting him through such a horrible time and put him back in his habitat sooner then I would've liked.

Oy, I feel like a nervous mother
