Quill Loss After Bathing? - 2006/06/20 23:08 I've given Lucy a short full bath before, but last night gave her more attention in her full bath.

I bathed her in Aveeno oatmeal and Aveeno baby shampoo using a toothbrush on her quills. Rinsed her off with regular warm water and then added a couple of drops of vitamin E to her back. I didn't think I scrubbed too hard with the toothbrush, she actually seemed to enjoy that part of the bath.

I noticed later though, after I took her out of her hedgie bag to play with her a bit (when she was no longer angry and bitter about her bath and nail trimming), that she lost quite a few quills in her bag - 10. I took them out of her bag, and changed her bag so that she wouldn't get hurt. This morning there were more quills laying in her cage-about 5 more. They have the little ball on the end. She got up briefly this afternoon to eat, but I didn't get a chance to check on any quill loss at that time.

Did I scrub too hard with the toothbrush or was she so stressed with the bath that she lost some quills? She was extra cuddly afterwards though. I've actually been waiting for her to go through a quilling, she was born March 2nd and has not gone thru that quilling that everyone talks about. Could the oatmeal bath and toothbrush scrubbing have helped loosened some quills that she was going to lose? Or is some quill loss normal with a bath?

Thanks!

Re:Quill Loss After Bathing? - 2006/06/21 03:34 Lori,
Since the quills had the little balls on them, Lucy was ready to loose them. If they were broken or splintered then I would be concerned. Don't worry, it may look like alot of quills, but they have somewhere near 5000 quills. Even adults can loose quills. They do grow back, I believe it takes somewhere near 6 months. I read so much, I don't want to give exact numbers, because I have quite a zoo and my info sometimes gets jumbled!
