bath time!! - 2006/09/27 07:51 Hi there, i have a question about my poko's dry skin, is it normal for him to have dry skin but no mites? i recently had him at the vet to get his nails trimmed and for a general look over, and the vet did not say anthing was wrong. I know that his past owner neglected him and he has never had a bath before and had a poor diet, could that lead to dry skin?
any tips for getting the moisture back?
thanks for the help

Re:bath time!! - 2006/09/27 13:12 If he never had a bath, his skin probably has dried saliva from annointing and Lord knows what else on it. I would think that would be enough to cause flaking. I would give him a bath with Aveeno Oatmeal baby bath and put a few drops of vitamin E or an edible oil in his rinse water. Only bathe him 1-2 x a month though because too many baths cause dry skin too. I use a baby toothbrush to brush my boys quills clean and their toenails. Daily I clean their poopy feet with unscented baby wipes. I try to do this first thing in the morning so the poops come off easier. They can have a footie only bath every day but not a full body bath. Cyn and Hedgie Boys

Re:bath time!! - 2006/09/27 15:49 It is possible for them to have dry skin and not have mites. It could be from beddings he has been on, improper diet, lack of humidity, etc.
On the other hand, did your vet actually CHECK for mites? Without specifically checking, it would be easily possible to overlook mites.
