Dusty quills - 2008/04/20 17:27 I have been noticing that my little Hudson has been getting a dusty appearance on his quills. Is this something that I should be concerned about health wise or could this just be caused from the type of bedding I'm using?

Re:Dusty quills - 2008/04/21 09:56 Depending on the type of bedding, it could be from that. What are you using?

I suppose a dusty appearance could also be little skin flakes if he has dry skin.

Re:Dusty quills - 2008/04/21 16:14 If he's not losing any quills, then it's probably from the bedding. The more active the hedgehog is, the quicker the bedding will break down.

Re:Dusty quills - 2008/04/21 21:42 well actually for the first time today I did notice some quills on the towel he was snuggled in this evening. I haven't noticed a great amount of them coming out, but I did see three or four tiny quills. I'm guessing that is mites huh? I'm getting him into the vet before the week is out...How can I be sure? How can I prevent him from getting mites (if that is it)?

Re:Dusty quills - 2008/04/21 22:13 He was only born Feb 19th, so could it possibly just be quilling? I'm a first time hedgie mommy, so I'm a little concerned. They are just really tiny quills...

Re:Dusty quills - 2008/04/21 22:43 Yup, the quill loss is from quilling. The dust is from the bedding. It sounds like all is well and you need not worry. (But keep an eye on him and let us know if anything else happens that seems off).
