I'm kind of worried - 2008/05/06 07:22 lately for probably the last 3-4 days hudson has been pretty sluggish at night time. Normally the second I go to bed I hear him get up and start playing on his wheel and eating his dinner. I've still been hearing him munch on a few pieces of food but in the morning it doesnt look like it was much. and I haven't seen any poop on his wheel...I've also just recently gotten him a heating pad under his cage so he doesn't get cold.
I do get him out during the day for about a half hour each day and he does his business then so I know he's eating. But is there something I'm doing or could he be sick? I'm a worried hedgie mama

Re:I'm kind of worried - 2008/05/06 12:55 I am sorry that your hedgie is not doing as well as you would like. Do you think you should take him to the vet for a total check up? I think it is good that you have evidence of poop/pee, so you know he is eating some. How old is your hedgie? Do his feet look ok? And what about his teeth?

I am sorry I dont have any answers, but you have my sympathies. Maybe getting him checked out ASAP will bring answers and solutions.

Re:I'm kind of worried - 2008/05/07 14:37 Yea, I'm thinking I may need to get him in for a check up. But he's workin on 3 months old now. I'm still seeing poop/pee every time he gets out to play... and he runs very fast all around my apartment... Still a good hunger for mealies. Everything just looks great. Maybe I'm just being paranoid...but I'm still seeing no poop in his wheel. He used to be very consistent about playing in his wheel every night. Could he just be pissy and sleepy from quilling? Because I'd say he's just about done quilling. One thing I have noticed is that two times now he's had litter (soft sorbent) stuck in his penile thingy and I've taken it out of his cage and am just using pine litter for his litter box anymore... Any advice would be really beneficial

Re:I'm kind of worried - 2008/05/07 18:26 Well, I noticed that Spikey's bowel habits seemed to change when he was around 4 months old and it had me worried. He went from being a hedgie that would poop all over when out of his cage (but always in one spot in his cage) to not pooping much when he is out of his cage and now pooping in all different spots in his cage. But he IS pooping, so I know he is ok. Also, Stasi (my breeder) told me that as hedgies grow up, they develop different patterns with this. He also tramples the poop into the carefresh so sometimes I have to really look to find it. Maybe your hedgie has learned not to poop while wheeling. Spikey does not really poop when in or on his favorite blankie.

I use carefresh and have never had problems in terms of getting caught anywhere. I dont have a 'litterbox' so I am not sure what to say about what kind of lining to use.

Getting a check up and building a relationship with a vet is a good idea so if in the future there are any problems you have somebody to turn to. I think, at three months, your hedgie is still very young and is probably changing his habits and routines and probably nothing is wrong. But getting him checked will put your mind at ease.

Andrea is right-it could just be that he is growing up a bit and changing his routine, but having a well pet visit is always a good idea. Ann

Re:I'm kind of worried - 2008/05/08 20:27 You know what? I feel pretty dumb now after all of that freaking out.... I got him out tonight and put him in his wheel just to see if he'd start running....I'm pretty sure he's got too big for it!!

I feel pretty silly now... No wonder he doesn't run anymore!

And funny enough, last night I had to leave my apartment for impending tornadoes and I put Hudson in his cage in the bathtub just in case and the lights were off and I came home and He was in his wheel...Silly little guy has been tricking me. I think he's just decided he doesn't like to poopy in his wheel while he runs! However, I new wheel is in need, he's growing fast!
