Can You Afford a Hedgehog? (My Article) - 2007/07/19 16:11 *A huge thanks to those of you who helped me with bedding and vet costs!

I've been wanting to write an article on the real costs behind the hedgehog, and I finally did. So head over to Can You Afford A Hedgehog - What You Need and What it Will Cost and see how much you are really spending on your little guy.

LMK what you think and if I missed anything. If anyone has any additional vet costs, please post them here.

Re:Can You Afford a Hedgehog? (My Article) - 2007/07/19 16:27 Kelly that's a great article! I didn't realize we spend that much on our little guy! Maybe it's just because I'm in Canada, but you guys are getting away with some pretty cheap things down there! Quite a few of those costs are double here...especially everything related to going to the vet. Plus those are for if nothing is really wrong....when Pepper had a chest infection it cost us $200 (including meds and vet)....but I think it'll really help a lot of people see what costs they are going to be facing!

Re:Can You Afford a Hedgehog? (My Article) - 2007/07/19 17:18 Nice article Kelly. It would be interesting too to see vet bill costs for a calendar year. As many of us know it just takes one bad illness to wipe you out. Especially good to know for anyone out there that thinks you can actually make much money as a breeder!!!! Lilly's vet bills for this past year including A/D food etc is about 800.00-900.00. Julie Pierce

Re:Can You Afford a Hedgehog? (My Article) - 2007/07/19 20:32 That is a really good article! Before even deciding to get a hedgehog my boyfriend and I did a lot of research about how much a hedgehog would cost. I think it really helped us to know around how much we would be spending before we got one. I think that this article will really make some people think twice before getting a hedgehog! http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=106956777

Re:Can You Afford a Hedgehog? (My Article) - 2007/07/19 20:41 That must be the basic minimal list for I know I've spent more than that on just one and the vet bills for just tests to render a diagnosis have far exceeded that. I just bought two sections of fencing at $32.00 apiece including tax. And the food bill for one fussy hedgehog escalated trying different brands and treats. Of course, I don't scrimp on anything for my precious kiddies from bowls to custom made fleece cozy's to Vickie's hefty hedgie wheel. Much of what I buy is on line so add in shipping costs. The rabbit we had was a whole lot cheaper than the hedgehog, and as cute as Wascal was there ain't nuttin like a hedgehog!

Re:Can You Afford a Hedgehog? (My Article) - 2007/07/19 23:45 ya, that list is really just the basics. You can really spend a lot on a hedgehog.

I would love to see some vet bills if anyone wants to mail or email them to me. I seemed to have lost more of mine then I can find. Plus, my best friend's husband is my vet, so that helps quite a lot.

Re:Can You Afford a Hedgehog? (My Article) - 2007/08/08 15:18 And that's just the basics. We spent an extra $280 for a window a/c unit because we're going through a heat wave and were too worried about him getting overheated! (We were managing with fans, but only the best for our hedgie!)

Re:Can You Afford a Hedgehog? (My Article) - 2007/10/23 16:14 Yep and since I have two boys who have to live separately, you can double the cost of everything for me. Thank goodness they eat the same mix and mealies aren't all that expensive. However, I have had dogs, guinea pigs, cockatoos and rats as pets in the past and I don't really think spoiling those critters was all that much more expensive. The birds were terribly expensive. But, as with any pet these little guys cost money to care for. I hardly ever think about it because they are part of the family. It is definitely something to consider when buying one however.
