hi, i'm a newbie - 2008/02/21 14:56 Hi everyone, my name is Annette, I am from the UK and wanted to join this forum as i am hoping to get my first hedgie this year! I am doing all my research first as I want to be able to provide the best husbandry for him/her.

I was wondering if anyone knew of any good breeders in the UK? preferably south of London?

I am planning to keep my hedgie in a large indoor rabbit cage, will he/she need any form of heating/lighting?

Also what is the average lifespan for a pygmy hedgehog?

I love looking at all the photo's on here, everyone's hedgehogs are so adorable!

Welcome to Hedgehog World!

I have no idea on breeders in the UK. Hopefully someone else on here knows. What tempature do you keep your house at? Where will the cage be kept? The hedgie will need 12-14 hours of day light each day. And needs to be kept at around 75 degrees.

The average lifespan is 3-5 years, but some have been know to live up to 8 years.

i'm from the UK too. Not many of us on here.

I got my 1st hedgie (Allie) last december and fell instantly in love. So much so i got another one 3 weeks ago(Milo).

indoor rabbit cages are perfect. thats what my two are in.

I have a Ferplast one and a Nero 2. i had a reptile heat mat under the cage when i got allie and although i had a thermostat on it to keep it to 70 degrees. it warped the bottom of the cage quite badly so i had to replace the cage.

Now I found they are fine all day with normal central heating and have a small thermostat controlled fan heater. it comes on from 12 midnight til 6am when the heating goes off, warms the room to 70 degrees then turns off till temp drops again.

I got it at B&Q, cost me £20 but well worth it. and cheaper than buying new cages!

I can't suggest any breeders south of london as i got mine from up north. However depending when your looking to get one, i'm hoping to start breeding my two around April/May time (i'm in Northampton) so if all goes well could have babies ready by the end of July.
