hedgie too fat for wheel! - 2008/02/17 22:33
so last night i fell asleep to the sound of omelette running in her wheel. but i woke up to a loud BANG! i sat up in bed and listened... then i heard a strange noise. it sounded like her wheel turning... but on plastic? i turned on the light and omelette is sitting there on her wheel staring at me. somehow the wheel became unscrewed (it's one of those silent spinner types that you can attach to the cage). but little omelette was still trying to run in it even though it was on the ground. and to top if off she wouldn't get off of it so i could fix it for her! she's probably one of the most stubborn animals i've met! but i don't know where she gets it from...

When you attach the wheel to the cage it does take away some support, so you may want to put it back on the stand....

Make sure it's good and stable. Bartleby used to run on a wheel when he was a baby, but one day it fell over and after that he wouldn't run on a wheel. I guess hedgehogs have long memories.

We replaced Ava's first spinner wheel with a new one recently as the old was falling apart.
The new Silent Spinner has had the screw come undone and fallen off twice even though we thought it was secure. 
Maybe they're making them cheaper...

actually the reason i screwed it onto the cage was because it would fall over too easily on the stand. for some reason it wasn't stable enough.

Try using duct tape to hold it to the cage bottom. - the stand that is - lol

I have a silent spinner for Pelly, and I've kept it both on the stand and screwed onto the cage. That way it's got double support for the hedgie on the go!

I keep it on the stand and on the cage too! That is why I love my silent spinner!! I would try doing that, because that same thing happened to Tweetle when we had the comfort wheel! Silly Hedgehog!

I wouldn't think this would make for an easy cleanup.

as long as the tape is securely fastened to the cage, and you have some sort of bedding on top of the tape, it cleans up really well for a long while.
Your other options would be getting a more stable wheel, like a quality cage wheel, or a bucket wheel.

My hedgehog Aarden is a big fatty and whenever he would try to climb into the silent spinner it would fall over on him. I put a comfort wheel in and he is using it without an problems.
