Annoying habit... - 2008/04/18 21:00 I've had my hedgehog for 2 weeks now and he was 8 week old when I got him. He's wonderful in every way but there's one thing that's getting quite obnoxious. Every time I take him out, he poops and pees on me. He very rarely goes in his cage. I'm trying to litter box train him (and put his poop in the litter after he goes) but it doesn't seem to be working at all. I've tried putting him in the litter box as soon as he starts going, but that doesn't do anything either. It would be one thing if he just pooped and peed right away so I could clean up and be done with him, but he'll poop randomly for about 10 minutes and usually pee twice during that period. I'm having to hold him in a towel at all times because I never know when he's going to go.

I was told this was just because he's young and that he'll outgrow it, but does anyone else have any advice or suggestions? His "habit" is not winning him points with my fiance.

Re:Annoying habit... - 2008/04/18 21:44 My hedgie does the same thing and hes about the same age. I think that is just something they need to grow out of unfortunately. Until then always have a towel handy! Jhenna

Re:Annoying habit... - 2008/04/19 08:35 My mom won't even hold Tweetle any more because he always poops and pees I feel bad because like if I'm holding Tweetle and come in her room she wont let me on the bed!! (she isn't trying to be mean but one time he pooped on her pillow and she didn't notice until...uh...you know what I mean)

Anyways, it is REALLY annoying and sometimes I'm just so tired of it that I feel like making an outfit that everytime he poops/pees on me it will all just dissapear!!...

Anyways, I love my hedgie just like you do and I am hoping... no PRAYING that it will end soon. (though my hedie is 4 months old so maybe it will be over soon!!!)

Good luck... to ALL of us!

Re:Annoying habit... - 2008/04/19 08:49 My hedgie is litter box trained and she lets me know when she has to go. She will squirm around like she doesn't want me to hold her. When I put her back in her cage she goes straight for her litter box. I think it just depends on the hedgie. Also your hedgie is a baby, and they will not have very good control of when they go to the bathroom. I do not think that my hedgie really started to use her litter box until she was about 12 weeks old,and I just recently figured out what she is trying to tell me when she squirm when I am holding her. Just keep trying to litter box train your hedgie and it may work in the future. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=106956777

Re:Annoying habit... - 2008/04/19 12:41 I know Omelette has to go potty because she paces frantically back and forth like, "I gotta go! I gotta go!" But before I litter trained her, she went anywhere and everywhere. I started to notice little things she would do before she went. Especially once her tail goes up. That usually means something is coming out! But baby hedgehogs are just like puppies. They tend to have accidents. They have a harder time keeping themselves contained, and they have to go more often. Just be patient. Keep using a towel, or blanket that you don't mind getting "dirty". And just be glad they aren't like guinea pigs that go every five seconds no matter what age they are! Or you can always opt to go with hedgie diapers! Lisa

I've been tempted!

Thanks for all the replies. I'll have to keep my eyes open for little "clues". I can tell right when he starts to go, but it's too late by that point. Once he's in his "pee stance", there's no stopping him.
