Lemming Hedgehog - 2008/04/07 11:38 Lychee decided to jump off the edge of the bed last night! Was just getting my hand to him to scoop him away from the edge and then he was gone. He’s fine as luckily it was where it met the wall and the narrow nature of the gap would have slowed him down some. We were just working out the best was to get him out but he decided he didn’t need air rescue and scaled the side of the bed to the top. I thought Hedgies were supposed to be inelegant climbers but he looked pretty adept.

Re:Lemming Hedgehog - 2008/04/07 15:34 Hedgies have bad eyesight, so he probobably didn't see the edge of the bed. Hedgies are good climbers, just not good at climbing DoWn...

Re:Lemming Hedgehog - 2008/04/08 03:30 Yes they seem to like the express route downwards. Have always been wary but the speed he set about his little gravitational experiment shocked us. It doesn’t help that now he’s decided to “mature” so has been acting a lot less active and is resistant to be stroked. I was really worried so kept picking him up, but something was poking out of his bellybutton … initially thought it was an injury in the low light of the room so started poking at him, poor little guy, he needs a DND sign for his alone moments , oh and a parachute for his disregard of edges !

Re:Lemming Hedgehog - 2008/04/08 17:20 I read somewhere years ago, that hedgehogs have horrible depth perception and aren't great judges of distance so that's why they run off things and make those crazy jumps. If it's any consolation, hedgehogs tend to slow down as they mature, LOL!

Re:Lemming Hedgehog - 2008/04/09 02:21 From my limited experience I think the main problem is they don't look down!

Yup that could be a problem.... reminds me of the movie Shaun of the Dead when they keep talking about some guy who said dos can't look up!

Re:Lemming Hedgehog - 2008/04/18 14:05 Mine tries to jump off things all the time. The best thing about hedgehogs is they ball up instead of run so they are easy to protect. Just make a loud noise and then you prevent them from jumping before you can move them.

I also read that in the wild hedgehogs will often climb trees and then they can't get down so they ball up and drop and the force of the drop is cushioned by their spikes preventing them from getting hurt. It reminds me of a cat stuck in a tree. Some one call the fire department
