I have a new hedgie! - 2005/06/07 05:48 Hello everyone,
I have just brought home my first hedgehog, and I am so excited!! She is 8 weeks old, and so far, so good. Tonight is night number 4 with her, and she sat on my lap and let me gently pet her. A little huffying, and slightly raised spines at first, but then she cuddled right up. I was wondering if anyone could give me tips as to litter box training, I am not sure if she is too young for that right now. This is a wonderful site, so glad I found you all! sunflower

Re:I have a new hedgie! - 2005/06/07 20:42 Congratulations on your new hedgehog. A hedgehog is never too young (or too old) to attempt to litter train them. Doesn't mean that they will necessarily get it though. Put a litter box in an area of the cage (under the wheel is ideal) where you would prefer your hedgehog to use. Use a type of litter in the box that is different than what you use elsewhere in the cage, but NOT clay cat litter, anything scoopable, or corn cob bedding. Place any fresh poops that you discover in the litter box. Then you hope that you have a cooperative hedgehog. Many hedgehogs refuse to cooperate with the concept of litter training.

Re:I have a new hedgie! - 2005/06/07 20:50 CONGRATULATIONS on your new hedgie. How exciting for you!
Good luck on the litter training. Most of mine just go on their wheel and I can put the wheel in a small tray to catch the mess.

Re:I have a new hedgie! - 2005/06/08 05:23 Thanks so much for the advice. Last night she used the box, although I think it was by accident, she went both in and out of the tray. I was able to hold her for an hour tonight, and she let me pet her, with no raised spines I think I picked a good girl, she is such a sweet thing. Does taking pictures bother hedgehogs? I would love to snap a few of her, but I don't want to bother her eyes.

Re:I have a new hedgie! - 2005/06/09 16:50 Taking pictures shouldn't be a big deal to your hedgehog. If possible though, take the pictures in a well-lit area, so you don't have to deal with the sudden flash of the camera.

Re:I have a new hedgie! - 2005/07/15 06:35 I hope all goes well with you and your new hedgie ^^
I am currently going through the litter box training with a 6 month old. My key advice would be do what I wasn't ablke to: start young! But it seems you are well on your way to that and I wish you the best of luck.
As for picture, I think it is no issue, I would just stay away from using the flash.
