washing a hedge hog - 2005/10/01 09:38 hi, my daughter just got a hedge hog from a friend of hers. he is about 2 years old and i just noticed that he has fleas. do you wash a hedge hog? how do i get rid of the fleas. the little guy is not used to us so he is difficult to handle right now. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re:washing a hedge hog - 2005/10/01 09:46 Hi,

When I bathe, I put water in the sink or tub up to the hedgie's "armpits." Make sure water is lukewarm- not particularly hot or cold, just comfortable. I put hedgie in to wade, and then I use my hand under hedgie's belly to stabilize and pour water over the back from a cup. We had a flea infestation about 9 years ago, and I used puppy/kitten flea shampoo on all my hedgies. Make sure to follow the directions- most require that the shampoo sit on the critter for 10 minutes or so in order to be effective. I use an old toothbrush to loosen any debris on the quills or feet, then rinse using fresh water poured from the cup. If nails need trimming, right after bath is a good time as most hedgies are really relaxed with their quills after a bath.

Re:washing a hedge hog - 2005/10/01 10:10 Revolution is also effective on fleas, and is often used on hedgehogs for treating mite problems. Talk to your vet about this, and he should be able to help you calculate the correct dosage.

Re:washing a hedge hog - 2005/10/01 19:50 I suggest consulting your vet and having a skin scraping done. These 'fleas' could be mites, which aren't uncommon and are fairly easy to deal with. Please read our articles on mites and show them to your vet. We've had great success with using Revolution. Consult your vet for dosage info. Kelly Sosik-Hamor
