Biting - 2007/07/29 12:08 Someone told me that hedgehogs really can't bite because their mouths don't open very big. Is this true? If not, how often do hedgehogs bite? ~Erin~

Re:Biting - 2007/07/29 12:20 A hedgehog can bite! I've been bitten a few times. One time was because she smelled something on me and just kept licking and smelling and finally ....CHOMP! I guess I should have taken my hand away before it got to that point lol. The second time I was bit was because I was sort of restraining my hedgie and she didnt like it one bit. So she chomped me pretty good that time.

My hedgie doesnt tend to bite unless something smells weird and she wants to "taste" it or if she is being restrained. I'm sure its different for each hedgie though.

Re:Biting - 2007/07/29 16:16 Most of the hedgehogs that are well socialized as babies won't bite unless they smell something interesting and different on your hands or clothes like pizza or chocolate or a different soap.

But yes they can bite. Most of the time if they do, it leaves a mark but does not break the skin.

Re:Biting - 2007/08/04 04:25 lol that has to be false, I've been chomped once or twice when I've surprised my little Quentin by moving my arms too fast while holding him, not to mention I've seen him yawn and he has a biiiiiig wide mouth Jessica

Re:Biting - 2007/08/04 04:28 even if you do have a hedgie that is very nippy I wouldn't worry too much, their teeth aren't like rodent teeth (which have the likeness of a pair of scissors crosses with a leather punch) but rather just little nobbly things....I've been chomped pretty hard once when my hand smelled like food and it didn't hurt much at all, much less break the skin Jessica

Re:Biting - 2007/08/04 11:02 P-k has drawn blood on John, and startled me with a pretty sharp chomp that did break the skin but no blood. She just does not like to be held, when we carry her we have her swaddled in a towel to get a good grip for her own safety. When we pick her up for a moment we have to do it over a couch or bed and keep our hands moving or she will bite us. Keep in mind that P-k never bonded with anyone - our home was her fourth during her first five months and her last owner got rid of her because of the biting. She's getting so much better and we've adapted for John hasn't gotten bitten in a few weeks.
