No hog love.. - 2007/08/12 22:17 I've had my hog for a few months now and she still doesn't seem to like me very much. Is this common? She doesnt let me pick her up without a fight and will poo or pee on me when I finally do get her picked up. Plus she huffs and huffs when I do get her up. I bought from a breeder thinking she would have been handled more. Anyway, I just wanted to know if anyone else had this happen early on in their hog's relationship.
Thanks
Keagan

Re:No hog love.. - 2007/08/12 22:19 you can always try and bribe her, feed her a mealworm or two whenevr you handle her! that way she'll equate you with lots of yummy goodies. I hear that putting your tshirt in wherever she sleeps can get her used to your scent too?

Re:No hog love.. - 2007/08/12 22:50 My breeder let us hold Ava when we picked her up and she was very relaxed. She told us that when we got her home she would put on a little show of huffing and puffing since she would be quilling soon and stressed being in a new environment. She told us that if we put her back or stopped playing with her when she did that she would learn she got what she wanted when she acted "huffy."

We've only had her a few days and she still huffs and balls when we take her out or move to quickly once she is out but we just keep at her and she gives up and unrolls and eventually ends up playing in her pvc tubes, crawling on us or cuddling. Are you putting her/him away or do you stop playing with her/him when she's/he's grumpy? She/he may have learned that is the best way to get what she/he wants?

Re:No hog love.. - 2007/08/13 01:57 I know your breeder. My recommendation is to shoot her an email and arrange for a visit. She can show you some tips and tricks on working with your hedgie. If you aren't compleately comfortable, the hedgehog will pick up on it and won't be comfortable either. Also, some of the things you are experiancing may just be normal hedgehog behavior, so you breeder can cue you in on what to expect to change and what you are just gonna have to live with.

Re:No hog love.. - 2007/08/13 21:11 I keep her out even when she poos on us.. I really just think she doesn't enjoy being out of her pen. She will run for her cage if we have her out running around but who doesn't want to go home. Anyway, I will keep getting her out at the same time and playing with her. She's just too cute to resist. Re:No hog love.. - 2007/08/14 07:54 She may be wanting to get back to her cage because she has to poop/pee. If you wake her up, let her do what she has to do and then take her out, she may be more comfy when she is out with you. Ann

Re:No hog love.. - 2007/08/14 17:37 Is she quilling? One of my girls got grumpy when she was quilling and was fine when it was all over...
