magellan sebastian the fourth from spain is here! - 2007/08/17 00:53 so my hedgie finally came on wednesday. I'd post pictures, but sadly i have none yet. i'll post one as soon as my camera is charged and i take him out to play

he's a standard grey pinto, with three white spots on his butt. He's extremely inquisitive, started exploring and running around his cage from the moment he got there, and LOVES to climb.

i had a super hard time picking out a name for him, and it came down to two choices: magellan (cuz he loves to explore) and sebastian (it just seemed to fit). eventually, i just combined the two into one of those ridiculously long names, but i'll call him magellan for the most part. man is it strange naming another living creature, i'm still used to just calling him hedgie! he's adjusted remarkably well...no sick looking poop, and he's been up and playing a lot, and eating/drinking jsut fine.

magellan loves to run on his wheel sleep under his wheel and poop by his wheel...he only ventures away from the wheel to eat. i'm not really sure how to get him to use the rest of the cage. he loves to dig, but wont use the dig corner i gave him, and only goes in the igloo to nip at the shirts i stuck in there. should i just get rid of the igloo entirely, and try something else as a nice hidey place?

also magellan does not seem to like mealworms. i took him out today to play with for the first time, and tried to good old trick of giving him something tasty so he assocaites me with treats and good things. he ignored the mealie entirely, even stepped on it a bunch of times. i offered it in a bottle cap, in my hand, on the floor, and in his food dish. he just paid no attention to it, ignoring it almost deliberately. is there a different, better way i can offer them? i feel like he hasnt even tried one, so maybe he really would love them...they're live and refridgerated, none of the freeze dried stuff

also he is very squirmy in my hands, which i'm guessing is probably normal. will he eventually ever get to the point where he will sit in my hands nicely without tensing up? what can i do to aid the process? he doesnt ball up much just runs away instead.

i'm also wondering. his toe nails are long, and i dont know how long i should let them get to be before i clip them. I might think they're long jsut because i'm used to the short human nails i possess. should i wait till they start to get a little curly (but not curved all the way in of course >.< ) ? And finally, i think he IS quilling as i found a bunch of quills everywhere and he's only 8 weeks old...how do i know if his skin is feeling dry and needs a bath? should i jsut give him one maybe this weekend anyway? i'd rather not stress himout too much as he's jsut getting used to me =)

phew long post. lets see who made it through

i dooo love my new magellan, and i plan to make his cage nautically themed someday too

Re:magellan sebastian the fourth from spain is here! - 2007/08/17 06:34 When Zelda was a baby, she really only liked her kibble. Now she's a big fan of mealies, though no other treats have really turned her crank. Just keep offering him the mealworms--I bet eventually he'll go for one. Magellan Sebastian is an awesome name! Congrats

Re:magellan sebastian the fourth from spain is here! - 2007/08/17 07:02 Glad magellan is home and doing well. Give him time to start using the rest of his cage-sounds like he loves his wheel so much he maybe hasn't had time to explore everything else.

Not all of mine will eat mealworms either. Just keep offering them every once in a while and he may decide to try one. At this point it is more inportant that he is eating his food.

Squirmy can be normal for some of them, especially when they are babies.
He may calm down some as he grows up or it may be part of his personality.
You can let him run around on you or near you and he may enjoy that better than being held.

If you look at his nails (if he stops sqirming long enough) you can see the pink quick part which is closer to the paw and then the nail part. You do not have to keep the nails overly short. You want a bit of the whiter nail part showing.

Is he scratching with the quilling? If he seems to be uncomfortable you could give him an oatmeal bath. If it does not seem to bother him I would not worry about it. If you look between the quills you can usually see if the skin looks dry.

Whew-made it through your questions if you have more let us know and enjoy magellan. He sounds like a great hedgehog.

Re:magellan sebastian the fourth from spain is her - 2007/08/17 09:27 I love the name Magellan, sounds solid when you say it and it's not a common hedgie name... and when you state he's an explorer it's simple without going into long explanation. Excellent!
