Warming up . . . - 2007/10/08 15:46 I got willow 3 weeks ago tomarrow.

When I go to pick her up or move anything in her cage she rolls into a ball and starts huffing. I will pick her up with a wash cloth so I don't get pricked and she usually will come out of her ball pretty quickly. But if I move she rolls back up, or atleast puts the quills on her head up.

When she is out eating during the day and I walk into my room, she freezes, then runs quickly back into her nesting box and hides.

She is approx. 3 months old. And Im pretty sure she is pregnant (petstore ignorance).

Is this normal? Is she just acting like this becuase she is pregnant? Will she outgrow it?

Thanks!

Re:Warming up . . . - 2007/10/08 18:04 This just seems like normal behavior to me. My hog will usually avoid me when he's in the cage yet warm up as soon as he's out of it. He's also wary of his forehead quills being touched and sudden noises so he will huff if one of those happens. Jessica

Re:Warming up . . . - 2007/10/08 22:23 It sounds like very normal behavior. Since she' s from a pet store, she didn't get any early socialization and she's a bit afraid of humans. All hedgehogs will do it to some extent, but pet store hedgehogs take longer to trust.

Also, if she is pregnant, all her instincts and hormones are screaming "Protect Yourself so the next generation will thrive!". You do want to work with her somewhat while being careful not to push her too far. Esp since you don't know exactly where in her pregnancy she is.

Re:Warming up . . . - 2007/10/10 09:22 My guy Noodles is like that- in fact he huffs and hisses and will sometimes pop when I'm just standing outside of his cage moving things around if he's under the liner sleeping. He's a... very sensitive guy . He used to stay like that when I went to interact with him too, he'd pop and jump in all directions with his forehead quills up. He still doesn't like his quills being touched, but he's getting better. Once you hold him for awhile, he'll calm down. My girl will run and hide if she sees me coming towards her or looking in her at night, from what I've heard that's just personality and some hogs are more private than others. Noodles will let me watch him if I'm very quiet at night most of the time. Good luck socializing your little one! *~*Steph*~*
