Hedgehog Very Huffy... - 2007/11/15 10:14 Hello, everyone.
I'm having a problem.
I've had my hedgehog since the 15th of September. I was living in an apartment at that time, which I moved out of around the end of October unexpectedly. My hedgehog, her name is Dazi, has just gotten used to the place.
Now, she was from Lethbridge, Alberta. MUCH warmer than where I had to move back to, Fort McMurray, Alberta, a good 12 hours north. Much colder, outside anyway. From what I've noticed, the temperature of her cage and the room she's in is comfortably warm.

Anyways, what she's doing is the moment I pick her up, she's in a ball and won't come out. It doesn't matter what I do. I can't tell if she's hurt or sick or anything, but I've already taken her to a vet and he said physically she was fine.

My house she's now in has four new people she doesn't know, and three cats. The cats don't bother her but the smell is there, so I can see if maybe that's stressing her out. The new people I can see stressing her out too, but they aren't in the room often, so I can't see that being much of a factor unless they were handling her on a regular basis. I'm the only one who does that, and before this move and even a few days after, she was perfectly fine with me.

I have changed the type of bedding I use for her recently, but that was over a week ago. Could it still be affecting her? And I gave her her first bath because she had made a big mess of herself in the ball I put her in so she can roam... she seems to like to use it as a portable potty. Could that have made her angry with me, angry enough to be huffy and refusing to uncurl for me in over two weeks? She started doing this around October 31st or November 1st, but she was fine before that and we had moved back the 26th of October.

Please help. I would like to know if there's anything I can do to help her trust me again, I don't know what to do. I hope that's enough information.

Re:Hedgehog Very Huffy... - 2007/11/15 10:31 Why don't you treat her like you just brought her home for the first time? I'm sure with all of the new people/cats/smells she's a little nervous. If you give her some time and you make sure that you continue to "play" with her, even when she's grumpy, she'll come around. Check out Ham's Blog !

Re:Hedgehog Very Huffy... - 2007/11/15 12:03 I have.
Or at least I think I have.
I've been careful, and handle her gently, let her rest on my lap with a blanket. She still huffs at me and won't uncurl, yet she's fine when no one to touching her and she's free to roam, and this has been going on since around the 1st of November.
The only thing that disturbs me is that she was fine for around five days after we moved. Someone suggested to me that maybe it took that long for the fact to sink in. Could that be possible?
I suppose I am still too new at this to know. I guess all I can do to continue to be gentle and patient, and hope she'll be fine again soon...

Re:Hedgehog Very Huffy... - 2007/11/15 12:45 I am sure that she is pretty freaked out by all the changes. Remember their strongest sense is not sight but smell. Imagine being a small prey animal, doesnt see well, and being assaulted by strange new smells and sounds. It is naturally going to put her into panic mode where self preservation is key.

Give her time to learn that she is safe and she will come around.

Re:Hedgehog Very Huffy... - 2007/11/15 23:05 If Dazi was fine for the first five days than I would rule out the move. What about your room mates? Do they make any noise that might be upsetting her? I lived in an apartment and my neighbors had an air hockey table, my sweet hedgepig turned evil. I had to move his hedgehouse to a room where he couldn't hear the air hockey game.

I would check for strange smells, cleaning chemicals and unless you were using cedar bedding, switch back to your old bedding for now. Also try sitting your angry hedgeball on a heating pad sit on low, if she is nice to you after that, then she is having temperature problems. Cold hedgehogs are grumpy. Once they wake up they will be active but still grouchy.

Do you have a good vet? You may want to make sure Dazi isn't in pain. Find a vet who really knows hedgehogs and have him/her palpitate her belly for tumors. She might have a bladder infection and that's why she doesn't wish to be held. I've had that happen with my Isabel.

Oh and about the ball... I've never had a hedgehog who didn't use it as a rolling port-a-pottie. I hope this helps!

Re:Hedgehog Very Huffy... - 2007/11/16 06:10 She could be upset by something in her new environment, whether it is different smells. different noises, the placement of her cage, or something else that is different like the amount of light near her cage.

Be patient with her and try to play detective and figure out the differences between her old environment and her new environment.
