Huffy Quilling - 2007/08/30 18:27 The last three days Ava has been abnormally huffly and puffly(which even when she's been huffy before she doesn't usually do... BTW huffy and puffly are technical scientific terms ) But she has been losing quite a bit of quills so I figure she is just quilling. So we gave her an Aveno Oatmeal bath with a tiny bit of olive oil in it and she snuggled in a towel for awhile (see cute Figure A: below).
I almost don't want to hold her she seems so upset by it but she is also SOOO cute when she cops an attitude and I don't want her to think huffly puffly-ness is a way to get what she wants.

Any one have any other suggestions, aside from the bath we gave her, as to how to make her a little bit more comfy?

Re:Huffy Quilling - 2007/08/30 19:00 Only recently has she been huffing when we hold her. When we gave her a bath there were a bunch of quills in the water. I think she's just losing the baby ones and it's making her cranky. Ava's mom!

Re:Huffy Quilling - 2007/09/04 13:50 They start quilling at a couple days old & continue to have 'bouts' of quilling up to 6 months old. Some hedgies quill around 1 year old also. All hedgies loose a quill or two once in a while, even if they aren't quilling. Don't automatically assume that since your hedgehog is loosing a lot of quills that she is truly 'quilling', as she could have mites. Since she is a baby though, I would be pretty confident that he is just quilling!

Don't be surprised if your girl becomes pretty grumpy for a little while....this is just like a baby teething!

Re:Huffy Quilling - 2007/09/04 22:13 She did not have mites. She was quilling.

I found a lot in her bedding too during this last change but it has quieted down. She's pretty much back to herself! She didn't even want any crickets or anything for a few days there. She'd just curl up somewhere on you where she could burry her head and then huff away, occasionally dozing. She didn't want to play in her pen either. She even wheeled less and came out of her igloo less. But she's good to go now! And is in fact running a mini wheel marathon as I type this

Re:Huffy Quilling - 2007/09/05 10:05 Aveeno bath helps sooth the owies from quilling.

Re:Huffy Quilling - 2007/09/05 12:11 question about quill loss - I've been finding some from Max pretty regularly, not gobs but more than any other hedgie I've ever had, at least one or two a day. I'm assuming this is not uncommon for an older hedgehog. Any opinions on this?

If it's only a few a day he should be fine....unless you find that he has overly flaky skin, itchy skin, or patches of fur/quills missing, in that case he probably has mites.

Re:Huffy Quilling - 2007/09/18 08:40 my rescued hog is quilling right now and does the full huffy hedgie hop! The antibotics and mite meds made him loose a lot of quills. I can see them coming out of his skin. It takes him a couple minutes to calm down, but he does make the cutest little blips...totally taken with him, bad temper and all!

Re:Huffy Quilling - 2007/11/28 16:04 is it common for them to bite at things when they're quilling? huffie is definetly quilling at the moment, i'm finding them everwhere. she's very grumpy the last two days huffing away all the time. she seems almost on edge. but yesterday and today she also started this odd thing where she's biting at clothing. not at me, she has never even thought about biting me (she does lick me though), but she bites at my shirts, blankets, sheets, whatever she can get her mouth on.

Re:Huffy Quilling - 2007/11/28 23:24 I don't think it has anything to do with the quilling. She may think the smell of your laundry detergent is interesting and wants to annoint with it. If the quilling is bothering her you can give her an oatmeal bath or put a little olive oil in a bath for her. Ann
