Handling... - 2007/12/05 14:39 Ok, well i am handling Miss Tinks daily. I get her out in the room her cage is in, in silence and talk gentley to her. There is just a side light on in the room.
She huffs when i go to pick her up, but i am not put off. I just gentley pick her up.
She unballs with in about 10 seconds, but she still huffs and jumps on occasions. She seems to have almost like tender patches that she huffs at. She has only been like this the last two days, and i have noticed that there are quite a few "baby" quills coming out. And i can see new ones coming through her skin.
Could this be what is making her more huffy? As a couple of days ago she didn't huff at all once she was out.
She doesn't have mites or any skin complaints. She is just losing her baby quills.
Is this what could be making her more huffy?
She is 8 weeks old tomorrow.
Thanks in advance

Re:Handling... - 2007/12/05 15:43 Yep! Quilling will do that. We equate it to teething, but all over their skin.
A bath with Aveeno oatmeal baby wash is very soothing for that.

Re:Handling... - 2007/12/05 16:59 This may sound stupid, but how do i go about bathing a hedgehog?!

And i'm not sure if i can get Aveeno over here? Any UK alternatives? I have never seen it before.

Thanks

Re:Handling... - 2007/12/05 18:05 The Aveeno product is basically a colloidal oatmeal bath. It's used for all sorts of skin irritations for humans so you most likely have some variant over there. If not, you can try to make your own. I haven't done so myself but it seems easy enough. Check out Ham's Blog !

Re:Handling... - 2007/12/06 09:19 Supposedly most hedgehogs like to swim. Mine does not, go figure. I usually fill a tub of some sort up about 1" and then lower him in it. He usually immediately starts to try and escape. Just talk to her and keep your hands in the water with her. Mine will crawl up onto my hands and then I'll usually pour a little water over his back. Also... she might poo in the water like mine does. Check out Ham's Blog !

Re:Handling... - 2007/12/06 13:35 Hi!
If you are having problems getting Aveeno bath there are a few sellers on ebay. Here's a link to one of them-

Re:Handling... - 2007/12/06 13:55 Sorry, just noticed that that link is for a supplier in the U.S, so it would take a while to get to you.
It is usually available from sellers in the uk on ebay, but I can't see any at the moment, although there is one for Aveeno Baby Colloidal, but I don't know if it's the same thing.

Sounds normal to me, I've never seen a hedgehog who liked to swim. They all seem to poo in the water then try to escape up the sides of the sink.

Re:Handling... - 2007/12/11 03:42 I picked up Aveeno by chance. I just looked for a body wash that didn't have any scent and used oatmeal and that happened to be the best one I found, then I come back to the forums and find its the one most people use. As long as its unscented and with oatmeal or at least for dry skin you should be good. Jessica

Re:Handling... - 2007/12/11 03:43 Oh, and pick up a toothbrush too, they're great for scrubbing the quills. Jessica

Re:Handling... - 2007/12/11 21:56 I love the nail brushes they are strong enough to brush and scrub the quills but they also protect your hands while you scrub the hedgies clean. LOL I have one that thinks she is at a spa and will turn this way and that way and raise and lower her quills/head to make sure I get "THAT" special spot. Dani Marshall Kansas

Re:Handling... - 2007/12/12 08:00 So I tried making my own because I had the oats on hand, and for some reason haven't come across the powder stuff in stores yet.

IT'S SO EASY. And it worked like a charm! Noodles' has really flaky dry skin, so I tested it out on him. Aside from getting a few pieces of oat that weren't completely powder (I'm working with a three year old, very used fifteen dollar blender here ) on his quills, which easily washed off, it worked great. As long as you rinse the stuff off at the end it's perfect!

Re:Handling... - 2007/12/12 08:05 I think it's ok to not rinse as well. More oatmeal will stay on his skin for longer and that will continue to soothe it. Maybe you should give him a wipe down with a rag after thought to remove any chunks? I'm going to give this a try next time but for now I'm still working my way through a giant box of Aveeno that will most likely last me for the remainder of this year and the next.
