Playing? - 2008/02/05 20:01 I got 2 hedgehogs and a new baby.

What ways could I play with them get them used to me?

Re:Playing? - 2008/02/05 20:11 You basically just answered your own question Playing with the hedgehogs and holding them gently will help them get to know you better and recognize that you aren't a threat. Taking them out in lower lighting or in the evenings may also help! And treats always aid in winning over a hedgie's heart Emily

Just take them out and let them get to know you. Some will want to cuddle, others like to explore and some do like to play with toys. Toilet paper tubes are a favorite toy.

A lot of hedgehogs love mealworms and if you give them one when you take them out they will warm up to you quicker.

Re:Playing? - 2008/02/06 10:05 Some hedgehogs think YOU are the best playground they will ever see and will climb happily all over you. Others do better in one of those plastic organizer bins. Put a liner on the bottom or fill with bedding then add toilet paper tubes, maybe a ferret ball, and some of those craft foam tubes. I also find that hedgehogs LOVE toddler push toys like small plastic people trucks.

To find out what kind of personality your hedgehog has set him/her down on the floor and let him/her explore. My Iz used to venture out a bit to explore then go set on my foot. Harley goes full blast in every direction. He doesn't want to be held he wants to RUN. Iz liked to cuddle. Harley will set on you but only after he's worn himself out playing first. I know you are new to hedgehogs but I think you will be surprised how sophisticated their personalties are. My first hedgehog Bartleby got out while I was napping and when I woke up I freaked. I was staying in a very old house and he could easily get hurt. I found him in the kitchen begging for food from our parrot who had a bowl of cereal. Bartleby was all about a good snack. So spend lots of time with your new pets and you will fall in LOVE and they will eventually decide you are tolerable and that they can put up with you.

P.S. make sure your tub walls are high enough your hedgehog can't get out. Harley spent all day yesterday on his back legs shimming around the tub trying to make a break out.

Re:Playing? - 2008/02/11 09:05 yes just let your hedgie out to run around and explore. the more time you spend with him/her the more he/she will get used to you. you can try getting a small animal play pen if you're worried about letting hedgies loose in your house. or even a critter ball so your hedgie can run around in it. a toilet paper tube is omelette's favorite toy. she loves to stick her head in it and just push it around. i've heard some people say their hedgies also like cat toys.
