Re:treats? - 2007/12/20 08:04 Satin enjoys freeze dried crickets from time to time. And baby food - especially sweet potatoes. Butternut squash comes in 2nd and green beans 3rd. I've tried bananas and eggs, but she doesn't seem to recognize either as food.

Re:treats? - 2007/12/21 16:08 green bell peppers are always a hit here. cooked plain meats including chicken, various fish (salmon, etc) are good to nibble on. We also make our own cookies, though, I will confess, it's been some time since we have!!
I've heard others talk about their hedgie liking bananas.
Oh - and of course, silly me, I cannot forget - hedgies LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!
crabcakes. (we discovered this upon moving to MD)

Do remember though, treats are to be given in moderation. Hedgie tummies are about the size of a small green grape.

Re:treats? - 2007/12/21 19:39 Just a thought here, but has anyone ever tried giving a hedgie cat/dog treats (broken up for course)? Or even small animal treats like those crunchy ones?
Has anyone ever tried plain tuna? It's stinky ( ) so it makes sense my hogs would love it lol.

My guys like canned cat food as a treat, green bell peppers (I think that's their favorite), chicken meat, carrots, peas (shelled), and especially raw corn... Oh man do they love it fresh off the ear! Of course, they've only had it maybe three times, but they totally dove for it after they knew what it was .

Re:treats? - 2007/12/21 20:48 I would probably avoid tuna mainly because of it's notoriously high mercury levels. Hedgies are so small so I try to make sure everything I give mine is organic. Maybe I'm just spoiling him.... Check out Ham's Blog !

Re:treats? - 2007/12/21 21:20 I must try green peppers, I didn't know they were such a hit!

Once I stuck a carrot piece from my subway sub in his carrier (I hadn't set his new cage up yet) and all I got from him was a chomp through it and no actual eating lol

Before I took the bus back for winter break though, I didn't have time to let him run around outside of his igloo and eat and drink, I had to go directly from waking him up to placing him in his carrier, then head off to the cafeteria to eat lunch real quick so I didn't miss my bus. I ate a fried breaded chicken patty sandwich (I know high in fat, bad bad) and had unzipped his carrier so he could look around. I picked off a piece of the chicken and took as much breading off as I could and man did he gobble it up. Normally he is really picky, even about chicken! Then I popped off a little piece of bread and he gobbled that up too. I felt bad because it probably meant he was starving to have eaten those things, plus I don't think that fried chicken and bread are the best hedgie treats. Just a sidenote since Quent is so picky with his foods, the only thing I've seen him truly gobble are mealies.

Re:treats? - 2007/12/22 12:20 I've tried Hector on lots of treats (baby food, melon, banana, cooked veg) but he has shown no interest in any of them. I've kept offering them to him, in the hope that he might decide that he likes at least one of them, to no avail.

The only treats that he will eat are wet cat food and mealworms (boy, does he love his mealies). I have started a mealworm farm so he gets the pupae and beetle as well as the worms, for a little variation, and he loves all 3 equally as much.

I'm hoping that I can get my new hog, Harriet, to be a little more varied with her diet.

Re:treats? - 2007/12/22 15:57 Ham doesn't really care for that many things that I give him. He mostly likes smelling things... I do continue to offer him the treats though. I've heard that sometimes they change their mind. Check out Ham's Blog !

Re:treats? - 2008/04/22 22:30 I tried the green pepper tonight. The result was Peanut's first anointing! It's so funny to watch. It looks like she turns herself inside out. Becky

Re:treats? - 2008/04/23 07:40 Dingo goes absolutely crazy for cooked rice but, not much else seems to interest him. The chicken was turned down, the crickets were ignored, even the wet cat food went un-nibbled.
I'll try giving him some banana tonight to see if he likes that

Re:treats? - 2008/04/25 22:28 Cottage Cheese and cooked chicken are always a favorite of Tweetle's. He also enjoys a bit of lettuce once in a while... and when he was in the couch once he found a goldfish that I took away, he wasn't very happy that I did that!! ...

Re:treats? - 2008/04/28 21:37 Spikey loves poached organic chicken breast; he has eaten small amounts of banana, apple and he annointed when presented with a small piece of cooked yam. He sniffed and took a small bite of blueberry but did not finish it. He has been on and off with regards to apple.
