Spike's Delight - 2008/04/12 01:45 I found a few people selling Spike's Delight hedgehog food on Ebay. Is this a good food to mix in with cat foods? ~Erin~

Re:Spike's Delight - 2008/04/12 08:15 No, I know that "hedgehog food" was originally meant as a treat to European hedgehogs. You do not want to feed it to African Pygmy's because it doesn't not have the correct nutritional value. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=106956777

Actually, Spike's Delight is formulated for APH's. It's just fine; I feed it to Satin along with some quality cat foods.

What you want to stay away from is Vitakraft - that's the one that was developed for luring European hedgehogs into gardens.

Re:Spike's Delight - 2008/04/13 06:10 While a lot of people are fine with Spike's Delight as just ONE of the many kibbles in their mix, I don't feed it anymore because I found whole pieces of bone embedded in the kibble. NOT fun. *~*Steph*~*

Re:Spike's Delight - 2008/04/15 08:35 I have used Spikes', and also know the manufacturer personally. I think Spikes is on the better end of hedgehog foods, but I would still mix it in with a good quality cat food if you were going to use it.

Re:Spike's Delight - 2008/04/15 23:55 I emailed a guy on Ebay who sells it and buys straight from the company who makes it. He told me if the food isn't used immediately after purchase, it will lose it nutritional value. He told me to either refridgerate or freeze it to prevent this and it should stay good for about a year. I was going to just try the 2.5 lb bag to make sure my hedgie likes it before buying the 5 lb bag. I mix 3 to 4 kinds of food in a plastic container that seals. Is it ok to do this? I don't want the food to lose it's quality, but don't want to keep all of it in cold storage. For those of you who use SD, what do you do? ~Erin~

Re:Spike's Delight - 2008/04/16 08:04 I keep two somewhat large, well-sealed plastic bins of Satin's mix (CSCLS, Wellness, Spike's)in the freezer. From that, I scoop out about a week's worth into a plastic water bottle and keep that near her house so it's easy to just pour into her bowl each day.

Before I had a chance to mix the Spike's into the rest of her mix, it used to just sit by itself in the freezer door... didn't take up much room on it's own.

THAT IS ABSOLUTELY TRUE! NEVER NEVER NEVER use Vitakraft hedgehog food. It's a treat for European hedgehogs. I fed it to my first hedgehog Bartleby, about ten years ago. At the time, this may have changed, it didn't say it was a treat on the box. Poor Bartleby got so fat he couldn't roll into a ball. He was so laid back he rarely rolled up. One day I ticked him off while trimming his nails and he decided, "I'll show her and roll up!" And he spent five minutes trying. It was hysterically funny and horrifying at the same time. I switched foods and later learned what I had done wrong. He didn't eat allot but it doesn't matter how much they eat, that stuff will PORK them up like little balloons.

Re:Spike's Delight - 2008/05/03 17:29 Yeah it still doesn't say it's a treat on the box. It's still sold as a pet food for our African Pygmies. At least I'm pretty sure last time I checked anyways, about a couple of months back. *~*Steph*~*
