gutloading mealies and age question - 2007/11/09 00:34 i'll be picking up my little one in the next few weeks and i'm just trying to get things in order here. i know that some of these guys like mealies and that it's a good food for them to eat. i'm wondering though if there's anything that i shouldn't be putting in the gutload that might be bad for her (i'm assuming that people are gutloading their mealies before feeding, otherwise what's the point?).

i have a ton of mealies around because i breed leopard geckos and i order them by the thousand, so i have mealies always ready to go and they're gutloaded. the gutload that i use is a mix of stuff, primarily it's made of a few types of oats, spirulina, bee pollin, dried veggies and fruits, various nuts, seeds, and a calcium suppliment. is there anything in there that a hedgehog shouldn't be getting?

the second question is at what age can (or should) they start eating mealies?

thanks in advance!

Re:gutloading mealies and age question - 2007/11/09 07:28 For hedgehogs, the mealworms are definitely a treat, therefore don't really need the gutloading that your herps need. That being said, I do not see anything in the list of things you are gutloading your mealworms with that will harm a hedgehog.
I tend to start feeding mealworms to mine at about 8 weeks. The big part to remember is that a hedgehogs' stomach is very small, and mealworms should be given in moderation.
