is there soft kibble? - 2008/04/25 08:58 My 4-1/2 year old Max had a great check up at the vet - the clavamox worked great on the uti and strep, no more blood in his urine. Even though he is looking great and very active, he has not been eating all his kibble. The image of the inside of his mouth will be forever burned into my brain of only a few teeth left in there.

I am stunned, she says he had all is teeth last summer and she says this is not unusual for a hedgehog his age. She said to moisten his kibble.

Max is the one who came with a big orange bag of Iams and would touch nothing else, he cleaned his bowl every night. He loved crunching. So I try to moisten the kibble - it balloons up and becomes soggy and he won't touch it.

He's hungry, I can tell and when I put a little dish of some other kind of kibble out he now runs and tries it and then gives up. He never wanted worms before but he is happy to get them now, how many of these can I give this old guy?

He's never wanted scrambled eggs or ground turkey or tuna, but I will try them again but I am not optimistic.

He has just refused Gerber Baby Meat sticks. I bought that Pounce 'moist' cat chews and cut them up and he wouldn't touch them and then I read about a voluntary recall so I tossed them. ARE THERE STILL RECALL FOODS?

Someone told me all cats love Temptations for they are soft inside. I felt through the package, they seem pretty hard and he'd have to chew through them but I'd gladly cut them up if someone tells me their hedgies like them.

Are there any moist kibble out there. I will pick up canned cat food today, but I'm not optimistic for he really hates food with strong smells that are mushy.

I was wondering about those meat in pouches, does anyone use them and what brands are safe and popular with hedgies?

He's been so sick and through so much, it just isn't fair that one of his few pleasures is eating hardily and now he can't do that. My poor sweet Max, he is the best hedgehog of the five I've had and he is now a toothless old man. I know the breeders here have strong opinions, and I would appreciate no lectures just product suggestions that have worked well for their hedgies.

Re:is there soft kibble? - 2008/04/25 10:02 Take Max's dry food and put it in the blender. Do not add water, just grind it up. That goes over big with my oldies. You can also get some dry roasted bugs and throw them in the blender with the mix.

I think the recalls are over, but then I'm not an expert on all the foods out there.

Our cat loves these-some of the hedgies will eat them too. Chicjken flavor. They are soft on the inside but the outside is hard.

Re:is there soft kibble? - 2008/04/25 21:11 I will pick up some temptations tomorrow, but I am concerned at how hard the outside is. What are the brands of soft kibble I need to target in on, the cat food aisle is overwhelming. He likes chicken, has never had any interest in anything with fish.

Re:is there soft kibble? - 2008/04/25 21:58 Soft kibble just gets hard when it is exposed to air for too long. Been there, done that, moved on to throwing the dry in the blender. Trust me.

Re:is there soft kibble? - 2008/04/28 21:31 I know my hedgie loves poached organic chicken breast. I poach it in water or broth until it is really soft (and thoroughly cooked of course LOL) and then I offer it to my hedgie in very small sizes. It is soft enough that it probably would not require much chewing. My hedgie LOVES it and eats it with gusto. You may want to try that. I buy the organic breast 'tenders' which are just chicken breast cut into small portions. Usually one small tender will last a few days (I then throw the leftover out because I dont know how long they last once cooked). And if you eat chicken, you can make the rest of the tenders for yourself.

My hedgie also likes yam, organic applesauce, and tonight he ate a little piece of banana.

I am sorry that your hedgie is struggling. Keep us posted.
