Spike's Delight - 2006/03/14 21:13 Hi HogFans!

I would like to have opinions about the hedgie food Spike's Delight, which was recommended to me and even provided to me by Oliver's breeder. It is supposed to be fully nutritious for hedgehogs and better than cat food. He has eaten it since he was weaned and is growing just fine (BD 12-26-05). Stools are uniform in color and formed.

Has anyone used it as the primary food and what do you think of it?

Re:Spike's Delight - 2006/03/14 21:18 I have used Spikes Delight before, and in fact, used to be a distributor for it. I think that it is probably the best quality hedgehog specific food, but I wouldn't say that it is better than cat food. Better than SOME cat foods, for sure.... but I don't think it is better than a good quality recommended cat food.

Re:Spike's Delight - 2006/03/14 21:21 I don't Use Spike's Delight and my exposure to it is limited, however I do know of some breeders that use it as part of their mix.

In and of itself, I believe it is over priced and not nutritionally complete. If you want to use it, I highly recommend mixing it with at least 1 (preferably 2 or more) other cat foods.

Re:Spike's Delight - 2006/03/15 03:18 Could I have a couple of names of recommended cat food to mix with the Spike's Delight?

Maybe I can introduce the cat food slowly, like a supplement at first, before I actually make a mix.

Thanks--
Linda

Re:Spike's Delight - 2006/03/15 03:41 Wellness, Innova, Chicken Soup for the Cat Lovers Soul, Wysong, Royal Canin, and Premium Edge are good foods. You might want to get the light version of some or all of the ones you use.

Re:Spike's Delight - 2006/03/15 16:52 I also like the Purina line a lot. Purina One, Kitten Chow, and I forget the other. Walmart Special Kitty (I prefer the blue bag because it isn't dyed) is another cheap but good food. You can mix these with some of the more expensive foods. Kelly Sosik-Hamor
