Meat? - 2006/08/14 06:03 Hello everyone I'm new here. My name is Sara and, though I don't have a hedgie yet, my boyfriend and I are planning on getting 2 girls.

My question is... Can hedgehogs live healthy lives with no meat or eggs? Of course they will have a cat food with meat in it, but my boyfriend and I are both vegans and do not eat meat or dairy products at all. Is this ok or do they absolutely need cooked meats and eggs in their diets?

Re:Meat? - 2006/08/14 06:58 I'm not an expert on hedgehogs but I would never give mine meat or dairy. From what I do know hedgehogs are insectivores. My Murphy only eats his cat food with a few mealworms & the occasional piece of fruit.

Re:Meat? - 2006/08/14 16:46 Meat and egg treats are not a HUGE necessity, as long as you give them a good quality meat based cat food. A hedgehog can live a good healthy life without the additional meat and egg. I suppose insects are out too, huh.

Re:Meat? - 2006/08/14 18:45 Awesome thanks guys! I just want to make sure I get everything right before I bring them home They will get insects. We have 2 bearded dragons and 3 turtles, so we do feed crickets and waxworms on a regular basis.

Re:Meat? - 2006/08/14 20:09 Crickets are great, be careful with the waxworms, I believe they are VERY high in fat, so you need to be careful not to overfeed them.

Yah Waxworms are about 15.5% protein, but 22% fat. We just use them as treat items for our dragons

How many crickets should hedgies get and how often?

Re:Meat? - 2006/08/15 03:51 My hedgies never get meat or eggs. They live just fine on kibble with meal worms and pieces of fruit for treats. Herbie loves bananas. Snow loves anything that resembles food. They are both happy and healthy. Cyn and Hedgie Boys

Re:Meat? - 2006/08/15 16:21 Number of crickets per serving, and distance apart between servings is a range of opinions that cover a wide distance. I personally consider 3-4 crickets a serving, and wouldn't do more than a couple or three times per week. HOWEVER, I don't frequently have access to crickets, so it actually happens more like "dump big cup of crickets in an escape proof container (aka the bathtub), start putting hedgehogs in the tub. Remove hedgehogs if they A.) think the crickets are eating them, or B.) Get full and collapse in a heap. Continue adding more hedgehogs until crickets are gone.

Re:Meat? - 2006/08/16 04:07 That is hilarious! I have this really great mental picture of passed out rolly pollly hedgies in a heap with smiles on their faces! Cyn and Hedgie Boys
