Overweight Hedgie - 2007/03/20 18:05 I have two Hedgies, Ellie, and her daughter Tessie. Right now, they are both living together in the same cage however Ellie is overweight. Ellie gave birth to Tessie and her 3 brothers and sisters in Aug. and I figured that she was a little bigger because of the pregnency. The problem is that her weight has never really gone down. She does run on her wheel so she gets some exercise but I know she likes to eat a lot. Right now, they eat Chicken Soup for the Cat Lovers Soul. Should I maybe mix this food with another food to try and make it diet? Are there any other options I could try to bring Ellie's weight down?

Re:Overweight Hedgie - 2007/03/20 18:21 You could mix in a bit of Puina Kitten Chow and cut back on the amount of food you give them. 1.5T/ day is enough. You hedgehog's stomach is about the size of a grape.

Re:Overweight Hedgie - 2007/03/21 06:13 Do they get the lite version of the chicken soup? And is she really overweight-can she roll into a ball? If she was young when she gave birth she may just not have finished growing. Ann

Re:Overweight Hedgie - 2007/03/23 17:12 Its just the regular chicken soup - not light. She isn't super overweight, like she can just curl into a ball but she definitly has some buldgy spots. Also when she goes to annoit, she can barely make it to her back to like lick i guess.

Re:Overweight Hedgie - 2007/03/24 08:17 I would try the light version of the chicken soup if you can get it. Much lower fat. That would be better for them and would probably help with the weight.

And they should be on a mix rather than one food. The Purinas are fine and easy to find at the store-Purina kitten chow, Purina 1, Pro plan. Around 9-12 % fat max.
