Insectavore ? - 2007/04/17 15:29 I got a curiosity question.

Here in Montreal, the summer is going to start up.
Right now, hodgii is chilling in his small appartment (20 gallon tank)
its not to bad, and will be changed with time.

In the summer, I will let hedgii roam around freely unsupervised in a part of our basement that is wonderfully hedgehog proof.

Anyways, here is my question.

Apparently, Hedgehogs are insectivors.
If I notice one day that someone left a crum of chocolate, or something silly that caused a mass of ants to invite themselves and have a feast...

Can I unleash my Hedgehog on them for him to hunt and have himself a nice feast ???

Would it be bad ?
Would he be interested ?

Has anyone done something of this nature ?

Re:Insectavore ? - 2007/04/17 15:44 Hedgehogs are insectivores. **however** DO NOT let your hedgehog have access to 'wild' insects. They could be carrying pesticides or other toxins, not to mention some insects (including many ants) bite and can cause injury to your hedgehog.

Hedgehogs are opportunistic feeders - meaning while they are classified as insectivores, in the wild they will eat what they come across - ranging from bugs, to eggs, plant matter, small mammals, birds, etc.

Note here - most of the hedgehogs imported into the US came from garbage heaps in Africa.

For our domestic hedgies - dry cat food is a good staple, occasional farm raised bugs are great too.
