ground turkey - 2007/04/25 15:50 My vet has cautioned me against giving Pippi people food, says it will "blow out her kidneys". I'd given her white meat of pork a couple of times and dark meat of chicken, the only people food she'd eat having snubbed tuna, salmon, white meat of chicken. I'd like to give her a little cooked ground turkey once in awhile, any opinions?

Re:ground turkey - 2007/04/25 18:54 I give my herd cooked ground turkey once in a while and they love it!!!!! I am not sure what he means by "blowing out the kidneys" but I am guessing he is meaning fatty liver disease?? At any rate, high protein and low fat people food given on occassion shouldnt be a problem (just dont offer them a filet mignon steak..hahahahahah) Julie Pierce

Re:ground turkey - 2007/04/25 19:39 I'd give her anything to put some pounds on her, there are so few foods she's gotten excited about (she loved pork roast). Ground turkey seems to appeal right now. a quarter size of boost once or twice a day brings her out of the igloo, but she is snubbing everything else except for worms and pkc. thanks for the advice, I feel better about the turkey I'm about to give her.

Re:ground turkey - 2007/04/26 07:35 Its tough when you have one that is not a good eater. My hedgehog Lilly is very much like that and its so frustrating! Currently she is eating Science Diet A/D (need a script from the vet) and ground kibble - you could try that if the situation gets serious. Also try adding some Ferretvite to the Boost and to her food it has a lot of calories and may help fatten her up. Good luck!! Julie Pierce

Re:ground turkey - 2007/04/27 06:27 thanks. I've been trying to get her to eat these special insectivore foods from exotic nutrition, vet reinforce it. Last night I mixed one into the ground turkey, at first she tried to just pick out the ground turkey and left it but the bowl was empty this morning (okay kid, where did you hide your vegetables). The insect pellets I put in the boost and she drank the boost around them (like a kid drinking the milk and leaving the cereal). I am hoping to continue this practice, each time reducing the amount of turkey and increasing the amount of insect paste. What is ferretvite? I could probably get some from Dr. Foster and Smith next time I place an order for L'Avian.

Re:ground turkey - 2007/04/27 06:55 Ferretvite is a high calorie supplement and you can buy it at just about any petstore or order it on line. I tried the insectivore diet too from Exotic Nutrition and my guys didnt like it either....oh well. Good luck Julie Pierce

Re:ground turkey - 2007/04/27 11:07 In my opinion, and my hedgehogs, the Insectivore is a waste of your money and the hedgehogs time.

I also have seen that feeding just the really high quality cat foods will cause the hedgehog to wear out their digestive system. If she's happy with the ground turkey, I don't see a reason to deny her that. Of course, I'm not a vet.

You may want to also try the Fancy Feast dry cat food. All the hedgies here love that one.

Another option I use with hhs that aren't eating well - I take chicken (or ground turkey, etc) and add a ground up version of my cat food mix, with some chitin powder (mainly from mealworm beetles) and a little egg to make little 'hedgie balls' and bake them. They keep well in the freezer and you can then pull them out and defrost for feeding to the hedgie. Kelly makes a ground mix for some of her hedgies with ground mix and powdered milk replacer. Seems to work for her too.

Re:ground turkey - 2007/04/27 14:37 I love your idea and would like to try it, is chitin powder correct or do you mean chili powder or chitlin' powder as in something they add to southern dishes.

I thought I'd try insectivore since she likes insects so much, the only cat food she will eat is pkc and snubs all hedgie foods. She loves real meat and that is why I am starting to introduce ground turkey into her diet.

Re:ground turkey - 2007/04/27 15:03 Chitin is the primary substance that makes up the exoskeleton of bugs. I just grab the dead beetles and grind them up. I'm in the process of organizing my supply so I can offer it to others too. Certainly it's not a requirement in the ball recipe. Stasi

Re:ground turkey - 2007/04/30 11:36 that's why I asked if chitin it was a typo for something else (chili or chitlin)... wasn't familiar with the 'bug' term. A month ago I was stunned when it was suggested I put garlic powder on hedgie food, but they make garlic flavored hedgie food and Pippi will eat it on occasion (but it does come out her pores and her tank smells like an italian restaurant).

Just got back from the vet with P-k, vet says she is in good health just overweight. Now I've got one that won't eat and one that will eat anything and has been fed a cereal bowl of CSFCLS and three crickets a night. Any suggestions on healthy cat food I can switch her to for better nutrition and to slim her down a little (she is extremely active for a big girl and hammers the wheel for hours).
