favorite treats - 2005/03/26 02:50 I recently got a new hedghog. I love her. I have tryed different fruits (strawberries, bananas, apples) but she doesn't like them. What kinds of fruits do your hedghogs like? What treats do they like?

Re:favorite treats - 2005/03/26 04:50 What she doesn't like today she may like next week or next month. Very often as they get older they seem more willing to try different foods. Just keep trying.

Re:favorite treats - 2005/03/28 05:25 I started my first litter off with veggies for mom and crickets and such and they saw her eating it and they dove in to try. I am going to keep trying this with each litter to see if it helps. Although the first litter and their mom is much better at eating than the second mom is for trying new stuff.

Re:favorite treats - 2005/07/15 07:29 It can be a lengthy process, but trial and error seems to be the best way. My hedgie used to like chicken, but quickly lost interest. She seems to still really like peeled grapes and the occasional banana chip (though, oddly enough, she doesn't like the hydrated form of bananas)

Re:favorite treats - 2005/09/29 13:24 Raspberries and blueberries are always a big hit here. Meal worms, crickets, and wax worms are great too. Every hedgie has their own preferences, so try lots of different things. Kelly Sosik-Hamor

Re:favorite treats - 2005/11/09 03:56 I have picky hedgies that usually refuse treats...I have found a few things they like though. Gidgit will eat mango and some (finely minced) dried fruit but hardly anything else treat-wise. Gilligan however will chow down on most anything that smells like meat. Gravy, kittie treats, leftover meat chopped up for him...he'll love it, He also eats fruit. Gidgit won't touch any meat stuffs or kittie treats in her dish...she's an odd one.

Some things that they both won't eat: Cottage cheese, mealies, pasta (well, homemade egg noodles), and crickets.

Re:favorite treats - 2005/11/09 19:23 Here we use lots of bell peppers as a first treat, seems to go over well with most. Stasi

Re:favorite treats - 2007/07/29 19:03 Hello, I'm a newbie here. I've had my hedgie Hoggle for about a month now and he's about 4 months old. I just tried giving him a blueberry once I saw above that someone else had success with them. He licked the berry and licked his lips and then he came back to it a couple minutes later and licked it again. He's not sure yet if he wants to eat it or not. I put it in his food dish so I guess I'll see later if he decided.

What's that I smell? Could it be a spoiled rotten hedgie?

LOL!

I don't really know. I believe grapes are toxic to dogs though.

Re:favorite treats - 2007/07/30 18:36 From what I've heard both raisins and grapes are toxic to dogs expecially in high quantities. BUT not to all dogs.
Kind of like some people are alergic to peanuts I guess. But why risk it when the side effects are death or renal failure!

Re:favorite treats - 2007/07/30 20:16 P-k loves watermelon and dried and live insects. Pippi wouldn't touch any fruit (I had peeled and cut up a grape, given mandarin oranges with no success. Pippi really liked both dried and live mealies and canned and live crickets before she became ill and they were too much for her eat. Max will not eat anything but the bag of Iams that came with him, he's four years old and never had an insect and I really don't expect to change much of his diet now. His previous owner said he was disinterested in any kind of treat. I had hoped the watermelon would interest him, but no... all the more for P-k... yum!.

Re:favorite treats - 2007/08/01 09:34 From what I recall..... it is not the grape itself that is toxic, but the seeds. In large quantities (and I think it was VERY large quantities) when digested they create a chemical that is very closely related to something that can be deadly if misused. Oddly enough, this can also occur with walnut bits (I think everything BUT the nut itself) and wild cherry leaves.

Re:favorite treats - 2007/08/01 11:39 oooh I think you're right, grape seeds are the problem. I would make it a practice to peel and de-pit or de-seed all fruits before serving. I don't even give the small white watermelon seeds fearing it will upset their tummy.

Even if the grape isn't toxic, I would worry that it would be a choking hazard.

I feed mine meal worms, lowfat cottage cheese, boiled chicken & egg(cooked of course). My hedgies won't eats fruits or veggies they are picky
