Can i Feed Dead Meal Worms? - 2008/01/16 17:35 umm.. so my hedgie doesnt show much intrest in live mealies n i stuck a dead one infront of him to see what he would do and he ate it up as soon as he sniffed it... so i have 2 questions..
1) is it ok to feed him dead ones? i dont really see anything wrong with it? lol but then again im not a mealie expert.
2) Is anyone elses hedgie like this?

Re:Can i Feed Dead Meal Worms? - 2008/01/16 17:57 You can buy them in a wet can form (zoo meds) which need to be refridgerated or they have them dried already (flukers). You can also take the live ones you have and put them in the fridge...this will cause them to hibernate and then give them to the hedgies. Julie Pierce

Re:Can i Feed Dead Meal Worms? - 2008/01/17 05:07 Another option is to freeze mealies it will kill them and keep the nutritional value of them. The canned worms are filled with preservitives and problably not a good idea at all.. In my opinion. I don't blame your little guy I wouldn't want to eat something that is still moving Mommy to 3 beautiful children

My hedgie loves the skins too. I will yell "Digit! Skins!" and she will come running.

Re:Can i Feed Dead Meal Worms? - 2008/01/18 09:42 I wouldn't feed them dead ones. There could be a reason why the mealworm is dead, and it could make your hedgie sick. I would try and feed live ones. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=106956777

I definitely agree with that. Unless you've seen it alive and killed it yourself (eg, by freezing it), you don't know why it died or if the reason for its death might also hurt your hedgie.

Re:Can i Feed Dead Meal Worms? - 2008/01/18 16:41 I wouldn't leave them out so they get crunchy, you need to freeze dry them or bake them if you want them to get crunchy and then afterwards treat them like any other food by refrigerating them and so forth, leaving them out can promote mold and parasites to grow.

I assume the dead ones you are talking about are the crispy dried ones that come with the live ones, I never feed Quent those, just seems unhealthy.
