Yogurt? - 2008/01/14 07:59 I know hedgies are naturally lactose intolerant, but I also know that they can eat very mild dairy products like cottage cheese. I was just eating a Yoplait key-lime pie yogurt made with non-fat milk and saw Quentin eating out of his food bowl. Curiosity got the best of me and I lightly dipped the tip of my finger in the yogurt and showed it to him. He licked it off and seemed to enjoy it. Now I'm wondering if yogurt it too much for a hedgies stomach or if it is gentle enough like cottage cheese, though I'm not worried much about him now because I gave him such a teeny tiny amount. It seems if it is gentle enough that it would be a good treat every once in a while since it is low-fat and he enjoys it. Any thoughts? Jessica

Re:Yogurt? - 2008/01/14 09:59 I've heard of people giving yogurt sparingly as a treat- something about the bacteria in it being beneficial makes it not as bad as a straight milk product. I haven't actually tried it though *~*Steph*~*

Re:Yogurt? - 2008/01/14 11:03 While yogurt is a dairy product, it's make-up is such that it is tolerable by not only hedgehogs, but in general, most people who are lactose-intolerant.

As an example, for those people who are in mourning over no ice-cream, or sour cream on their potatoes, frozen yogurt and plain yogurt are GREAT stand ins.

Re:Yogurt? - 2008/04/01 11:42 The fermentation process of yogurt breaks down most of the lactose sugar. I would imagine some would be good because of the bacteria that helps digestion and it is really high in calcium. Becky
