canned or free-dried - 2008/04/30 10:17
Do your hedgehogs prefer canned or free-dried crickets? I can do live mealworms but crickets running around my apartment sounds like too much to handle.

I bought the canned ones once - Satin liked them just fine, but they smelled like dog poop to me.
Since she likes the freeze dried ones and they don't carry such a stink, that's what she has now.

if it not meal worms but bamboo worms instead, it will look so yummy for my stomach 
we call that in Thai as "Rodt Douan" (รถด่วน , it's the most delicious fried worms in the world for me. And you can share it with your hedgehog if it raw too.
Oh, I know what you're thinking about it, but you know?, try it then you will change your opinion.
There're more than 100 kind of worms and you can eat it all in my country too

I tried those but the hogs didn't like them. I've heard a lot of people using those though and their hogs do just fine  .

I bought some canned crickets but even though they were the "small" ones, they are really too big for Wesley. He'll chew them for a minute and then spit them out. However, one of my cats LOVES them.

I've seen specials on tv where they talk about different cultures that eat various bugs. I certainly don't see anything wrong with it, and would even try it! (though I confess, I'd be a bit hesitant at first I'm sure!)

Excellent source of fat and protein and much easier on the environment to grow than cattle. I wish Americans didn't have such a stigma around bugs. Unfortunately I am one of those and while I know how practical it is to eat insects I just can't bring myself to do it.  maybe some day.

I used to give Aragorn some of the Fluker's mealworms, he didn't like them as much as the live ones but he thought they were alright. As for people eating bugs, every time I see people making food with bugs in it on the TV I think it looks yummy but my stomach doesn't agree with my head in that kind of matter, as it won't allow me to eat anything that looks alive (i.e. rare steak, mussels, occasionally even whole chicken or canned fish (the one with the bones still in it)) thus I try and stick to things that look like meat and not animal. It's almost torture, bugs just look so crunchy...
Pets:
Timmy (M, neutered) and Smokey (F, spayed) the maine coon and something else rescue cats.
Aureus (Unknown, called He) the goldfish.
Pepper (F) and Briar (M) the hissing cockroaches.
4 Minnows, rescued from being live bait.

You can go either way, I keep both on hand but favor the live ones because they are fresher and LOADS cheaper than Fluckers! Fluckers run $7-9 a can for heaven sakes!

I think Aria is referring to the good old fashioned German Cockroach, which doesn't make a good pet. Unlike the hissing roaches you have. But hey to each their own. 
Lots of cultures eat bugs and world wide it's more common to eat them than not to. Harley and I love to watch that show Bizarre Foods on the Travel Channel. Lots of bug eating! It's interesting what each culture considers bizarre. I just saw an old Iron Chef episode (the one from Japan) and they had a Mexican chef battle the Italian chef. They really didn't understand how different Mexican cooking is from Italian and when the Mexican chef made a mango salsa over rice they were worried about eating it! While here in Sunny South Carolina we LOVE our peach salsa. These are the same people who eat FISH ICE CREAM and they were afraid of Mango salsa. I love our world, it's so diverse and never boring!

you can have all of my cockroaches. I do not like them. at all. Their antennas freak me out. They are not as bad as the house centipedes though. They are REALLY gross!

I agree! The centipede things are creepy, and loose bugs in the house are NOT ok. However, I raise mealworms and dubia roaches here - though they are more...civilized? in that they stay in their containers and don't get out and crawl around. (and the hedgehogs/lizards ADORE them!)

Centipedes? Even better  . I had one of those in a sauce jar not too long ago, I got it from my neighbors. But I let it outside under the deck because I didn't think I'd be able to find it enough insects in the winter.

Good point. They make skin go itchy. I was thinking of the American cockroach.

You know what. I never looked close enough to be able to tell you which they were. I just hit them with the shoe I kept in the bathroom for that purpose. They're gone now since I got one of those as seen on tv things that look like they shouldn't work. I forget what they are called but if you see them on tv get one because it does work.

I think for Asian people like me.... normally cockroaches are something that you have to kill it and throw it away from your house.
1.it's a dirty animal
2.it's bring us a really bad house (unlucky)
anyway there're the biggest cockroaches breed in Thailand too (about 3 inches for each one). They give it to Arowanas, Frogs and some fishes.
