Wonder Boy - 2007/05/03 13:12I was cleaning my hedgehog cages last night and had my girl and boy hedgehogs in seperate playpens. I went to the basement to wash everything and wipe out the cages and when I came back the boy must have climbed/jumped/flew out of his playpen walked over to hers and climbed/jumped/flew in. I have always put them in seperate pens and this has never happened before. Anyways, it looked as if they were up to no good if you know what I mean and she had some blood on her back/side. I starteled them when I came back in the room and they froze and balled up. Needless to say, I seperated them and put them back in their cages. What are the chances that she is still a wholesome young lady and not with hoglets?

Re:Wonder Boy - 2007/05/03 14:11Caught in the act were they? It does not take much time. I had a couple who did not like each other much and had at most 10 minutes together and she had babies.
If I were you I would go under the assumption that she is pregnant and start reading up on breeding in the article section just to be on the safe side.Ann Connecticut Hedgehogs

Re:Wonder Boy - 2007/05/22 14:10Okay, I have a new question: I am getting ready to go out of town for a long weekend and I have someone coming to check on the hedgehogs. The day I get back will be the 28th day since I caught my Hedgies in a compromising situation. I am getting back late at night and am wondering if I do a cage cleaning on the 29th day is it ok? I will do a good cleaning before I leave but would love to get another in just in case. Thanks for the help!

Re:Wonder Boy - 2007/05/22 15:14On day 29 you SHOULD be fine, as long as you return her "safe" nest box to her cage. What you could try is giving her a moveable nest box (as in, moveable for you, I like the shoebox type storage bins with an entrance hole cut in the side) before you leave, then you can just pick up the nest box without disturbing any construction that she has been working on and clean the rest of the cage. Re:Wonder Boy - 2007/06/01 08:18Okay, I got back from vacation and have done a deep cleaning on the cage and everything in it. Mizzy is now at day 29 but has not been doing any nesting. I have a nesting box and left plenty of TP in her cage, is this a sign she isn't pregnant? She mainly sleeps in her little snuggly or under her wheel, which had now been taken out of the cage. Thanks for all the help!!!

Re:Wonder Boy - 2007/06/06 11:39Well, today is day 35 and no babies yet. She finally made a small nest (I think) but is still happy and friendly. I put a fan in the room she is staying in to drown out the noise of my kids running through the house and it seems to work well. I have even been able to go into her room change the food and water and clean up any dirty spots without her knowing I am there. I will keep you posted if any babies show up and will probably have lots more questions.

Re:Wonder Boy - 2007/06/12 11:51We have hit day 41 and still no babies. She is still really friendly and eating just fine. Last night after putting her back in her cage I bumped her nesting box and must have messed it up a little because she went in there after eating a few bites and went to work for the next 15-20 minutes fixing it up just right again. I guess I am wondering, is she nesting or is this just her favorite place to sleep?
