young breeders - 2007/06/20 07:56 Hi everyone! I was just wondering, are there any breeders on here that are in their teens or early 20's? I am 17 (yesterday was my birthday ) and I was thinking about MAYBE breeding in a year or two. I just got my first hedgehog...so I am NOT going to even think of starting to breed for another year or more. I'll see how it goes and then maybe consider the idea. I just seem to have such a sweet, outgoing, curious little girl and I was just think....hmmmm, maybe if she had hoglets they would inherit her personality. She is just a little over 6 weeks old now, so I have plenty of time to think over the idea of breeding her. We often have pregnant dogs that my family rescues, so in a way I'm kinda used to the late night shifts and stress that comes with baby critters of any kind. I was just wondering if any of the younger breeders out there could share some of their experience and input with me(input from any of you breeders is ok). Thanks much! I love my baby Emma!

Re:young breeders - 2007/06/20 08:41 I am in my very late early 20s. Ok, I am in the twilight of my 20s, but hanging on for all it is worth! *grin* I started breeding hedgehogs in 99, when I was.. um... *counts fingers.....* 21?
By that time, I had already owned hedgehogs for close to 4 years, and thought I had a good handle on the hedgehog thang. And having grown up on an active ranch (cattle, horses, cats, dogs, a few goats, chickens, etc etc etc) I figured I had a good grasp on the concept of breeding animals. So, I put that experience and knowledge into breeding hedgehogs, and realized that my experience equalled approximately NOTHING! *grin*
I would definately recommend owning hedgehogs for a while before seriously looking into breeding, While you are desperately in love with your new hedgehog, we see a LOT of people who lose interest after the "new" wears off. Not that I am saying this is going to happen to you, just saying that it does happen.
In the meantime, read lots, ask questions, get used to owning your little girl, and enjoy your new status of a hedgehog owner!

Re:young breeders - 2007/06/20 10:17 Happy b'day-hope it was a good one

I have 2 teens here and that's all I will say about age Think about what your plans are for the future. College? Job? Boyfirend? Social life? You're at a time in your life where things can change a lot over the next couple of years, and you may not want to be tied down with a breeding herd.

Glad you are asking questions-that's a good place to start.
