let me know if you receive your packet. If you do, I will call that lady directly....everyone else I talked to at the office told me it would be sent out directly and never arrived (very annoying)!!!

Re:USDA license - 2007/01/23 14:43
You bet. Because of what you originally wrote about not receiving the packet, I specifically asked the guy I talked to what to do if I did not receive the pre-license packet in 5-7 days and that's when he told me to call and ask for Jeremy. So then, I will let you know directly if I get this packet within 5-7 days. I noticed before that when I applied for the packet online and also when I emailed the USDA Eastern region I received absolutely NO replies. Maybe it's all in the channeling? I don't know, but I'll let you know if I get the packet. When you called for yours, did they ask questions? ~~Tree

If it doesn't come then I will call this Jeremy guy and if I don't get satisfaction-- --I'll call the Dr. and complain to her since she's the one that comes out and does the inspections.

It's great if you've been able to already make contact with the person who will be your inspector!
They each cover a specific area, my inspector covers MD and PA. :o)
I think my inspector mentioned on this last visit that there are 100 USDA/APHIS inspectors in the Eastern division...Not a lot when you think about how many places they have to annually visit!
My advice is to have everything ready before your initial inspection, it's a good way to make a nice impression on your inspector, who is definitely NOT someone you want to annoy.

Yeah I would love to get a peak at the requirements just to start getting into the mode and getting my stuff together. If anyone has the info on what specifically they look at (and its not too long) would you mind posting it??

Re:USDA license - 2007/01/23 19:55
I agree that the inspector, whoever he or she turns out to be, is not to be annoyed and to have all your ducks in a row. I intend to get passed the first time around so as not to annoy her over coming out a second time! I imagine you have to have all your vet papers in order, clean living conditions for your hedgies, temperature controlled climate, and then there's probably a physical examination to make sure they don't have mites and are clean...I'm guessing here.

Hi Julie~~Guess what? My packet came in the mail today and I'm so excited! It comes with a pre-license application package, a form for the veterianarian to fill out, a Licensing and Registration Under the Animal Welfare Act booklet, and the thick Animal Welfare Act and Animal Welfare Regulartions book. If I were you, I'd call the number I gave in an earlier post. Not the one for the vet lady but the other one. I'll look back over the posts to find which number it is and repost it.

That IS funny you were thinking about me and if I got the packet today and here I receive it and post about it. Definitely call that number and tell them you want to be sent the pre-license package and after they take all the info down say to them, "And if I don't receive my package in 5-7 days then who do I call back and ask for?" Also ask for the number to let them know you're serious about getting this packet! I'd even tell them you've tried to get it "x" amount of times in the past but never receive it. The guy I talked to told me to call back and ask for Jeremy if I didn't get my package in 5-7 days. I'd give 'em 14 days max before calling back. Good luck!

Re:USDA license - 2007/07/01 06:52

Here is the link to the regs that deal specifically with federal USDA licensing requirements for breeders, dealers and pet stores since that seems to get the most questions. http://www.aphis.usda.gov/animal_welfare/downloads/awr/9cfr2.1.txt
In addition to the federal USDA laws, there may also be state and local registration or licensing. You may need state and local permits through your wildlife or health departments.
In some states, the hedgehogs and any related products you sell will be subject to sales tax so you have to get a sales tax permit. Depending on what town you live in, there may be local or regional zoning permits that you have to get too.
Lots of paperwork

Re:USDA license - 2007/08/07 16:05
Just saw this tread & wanted to mention something...I contacted the USDA regional office also, but I was told differently...
Portions of our email below:
3 breeding female rule: This rule applies to the breeding and selling of small wild/exotic mammals (pocket pets, i.e. sugar gliders, hedgehogs, degus, jerboas, exotic mice/rats) Under this rule if you have more than 3 breeding females, in any combination, of these animals, you are required to obtain a license to sell the offspring. Any animals not used in the business of breeding must be kept separate from the breeding stock, and if bred and the offspring sold, MUST be included.
My reply:
I have a question, under the 3 female rule, if I had a breeding female that was retired & wasn't used for breeding anymore, would it count as one of the 3 breeding females as long as it was separated from the females used for breeding? Or would it need to be spayed to not count?
His reply:
If she is kept separate, and not being bred, she does not count toward the number of breeding females you maintain.
Just thought I'd mention that... Emily
