First of all, why do you want to breed? How long have you had hedgehogs? Where did you get the girl & how old is she? How about the boy? Breeding your hedgehog shouldn't be taken lightly! There are a lot of things that could go wrong, you could loose the mother &/or the babies. You could have to do an emergency c-section which could cost $1000+, etc.....
I let the hedgehogs be together 7-10 days....if they haven't bred by the first couple days, they most likely aren't going to breed at all.

Do you have a mentor to help you and answer your questions? Do you know the lineage of your hedgehogs? There is a lot that can go wrong and that is why we are asking you so many questions.
There are a lot of articles in the breeding and babies section that will answer some of your questions. Each of the breeders in the breeder list here also have their own websites with a lot of information. I recommend reading as much as you can before you decide to breed.

Re:borrowed male - 2007/08/20 07:38
yeah i know her linage.shes 5-6months old.i got it from my friend.he is a breeder.he got a active breeding male,so he thought he wanna give me a try of having 'babies'.at first i thought they were like guinea pig,i do breed guinea pig many times.but i dont think i want to breed her.i felt a little bit scard after reading few articles that it might sometimes kill the female 1 without any sign.i think is good to know more information.but i am definately not going to breed her yet.or maybe not at all.gaining experience.about not letting them to breed,if i want to buy a friend for her, should i find a male or a female 1?

Definitely don't get her a male cage mate. Hedgehogs are solitary animals in the wild, which means they usually like to be alone. Sometimes females do enjoy the company of another female, but don't automatically assume they'll get along.

Females will generally live together without any issues. Yes, occasionally there are some that don't get along, but usually it isn't an issue. ALL of my girls live in group cages and they do fine. There are some minor spats....... but those are normal and nothing to worry over. If there is a major spat, the trouble maker goes into a different group, but it doesn't happen often.
When introducing a new cage mate:
Always clean and disinfect the cage to get all of the original hedgehog's smells off of it.
Rearrange the cage so that it is a 'new' home for both hedgehogs.
Problems arise when introducing a new girl into the established territory of the first girl.

Well, I would say 3 hedgehogs....any one else?? You will need 1 wheel per hedgie though.

10 ft x 8 ft? I have lived in smaller rooms. While that is an awesome enormous cages, I cringe at thinking about dealing with it. A.) cleaning is going to be hell. B.) It will take up an entire room. C.) Do you plan on living in the cage with her? That would be a big enough cage for quite a few hedgehogs, as long as there were plenty of hidey spots, wheels, food dishes, and water bottles. Remember though, no matter HOW many hedgehogs you end up getting, males should NEVER EVER be housed with females full time. The females will be continuously pregnant, and you will be cleaning up large quantities of destroyed babies. If you have a 10 foot long space that you want to fill, I would personally go with something more reasonable width, like, say, 2 foot. A 10 x 2 would still be lots of room for a small herd of female hedgehogs, as long as you have a back up cage for anyone who doesn't get along in the herd. My personal recomendation- if you want another hedgehog, then build a reasonable sized cage say, 2 x 4 or 2 x 6, get a second female hedgehog to room with your current, and call it good. Becca
