Nesting box and igloo. . . - 2007/10/12 17:24 Willow should be due soon, and she has her nest box.

So she was sleeping in her nest box for over a week. Then I gave her more hay to nest with and she nested in the nest box and igloo. Now she just sleeps in the igloo, which is very small. I don't want her to have them in there becuase I read that small boxes can be the cause of the moms eating the young. So should I just take out the igloo? Or will she know to go into the nest box?

Re:Nesting box and igloo. . . - 2007/10/12 19:35 Question, it may be silly: if I gave hay to my girls (timothy hay), would they make their own nest to sleep in? Is it beneficial to put hay in a cage for any hedgie or do just pregnant girls use it? Just curious...

Re:Nesting box and igloo. . . - 2007/10/12 21:22 Im not really sure.

I have horses so I have planty of hay, and I gave her some to see if she would chew on and bury in it. And she loves it. She comes out and stuffs as much as she can in her mouth, and then runs as fast as she can back into her box. And then come back out and do it again.

I figured that is probably similar to what they would use in the wild . . .

Re:Nesting box and igloo. . . - 2007/10/13 08:41 Hay can mold rather quickly and would have to be changed often. I would not use it in a nest box as once she has the babies you may not be able to get in there for the first two weeks and would not be able to change it. Ann
