NEW arrives at LOL Kennel - 2008/02/12 13:20 Hey everyone,
Okay Heangel the hedgehog female who decided to try flying two days ago just delievered a litter of healthy little hedgies. I am guessing that she had 4-5 but will know for sure when I get them out in a couple of weeks. However we do have a major problem I am moving into my apartment on Friday and it is between 30-45 degrees outside and I am not sure what to do? Is it safe to move Heangel and the babies if I wrapped them up really well? Or should I move her cage upstairs and leave her here at my in-laws until the babies are two weeks or older? It may be warmer by then and the babies will be older. But I am just not sure what to do . I mean we only have a 15 min car drive and I could have the heat blaring in the car and at the apartment and the last night Heangel was in the car she was fine. But she is a first time mom and I am just at a loss as what to do.

congrats!!

I wouldn't risk moving the mom and babies. Going from one house, to the cold, then in the moving car, then back out side, then in to a different house seems as if it would be majorly stressful on the mommy. I would leave the mom and babies there until mommy is totally comfortable with you holding that babies, after she's fine with that, I think it would be fine to move them then. Which would probably be around 2 weeks.

Re:NEW arrives at LOL Kennel - 2008/02/12 13:50 Agreed. Moving them is more than likely going to cause the poor mom extra stress, which very easily cause her to destroy, or reject, all the babies.
Keep em where they are, at least until they're 3 weeks old.

Re:NEW arrives at LOL Kennel - 2008/02/12 14:00 Okay guys thanks that is what I was thinking too. So I will then plan on moving them upstairs (we have been living the basement ap at in-laws) as that way they will not be bothered by the noise of us packing and moving. I will just leave two heaters in the room with them turned up as my father in law is horrible when it comes to keep the house heated up (which is why I brought portable heaters when we moved in) and I will plan on leaving them here until they are between 3-4 weeks and depending then on their size and the weather we will go from there. However to avoid this problem with the other hedgies I believe I will go ahead and move them over tonight or tommorrow as I have 3 others who are pregnant.

Oh BTW Stasi, Ann, Tig, and Kelly I re-bred Midnight on the 10th as I have been weighing her and she hasn't changed in weight so therefore I would guess she didn't take at the first breeding. It is so hard to tell with her as she is quite the pine ball and it is hard sometimes to know if she is pregnant or is just being her normal pine ball. Chat with everyone later

Re:NEW arrives at LOL Kennel - 2008/02/14 22:05 Sad News,
I came home today to find dead babies all over the cage, she actually have 6 and their is one still alive which she is feeding but I am worried that she will destroy it too. But will keep my fingers crossed and if she does then this litter simply wasn't ment to be. Which sucks horribly but sometimes that is the way the world is. -Dani

Re:NEW arrives at LOL Kennel - 2008/02/15 20:01 Why do hedgie mom's do this?

PS I know it is due to stress, etc... but what is the animal kingdom logic in it?

Re:NEW arrives at LOL Kennel - 2008/02/19 14:51 Well today was moving day for hedgehogs and much to my surprise Addie has delivered her second litter (sometime between Saturday and Today) so she will with Heangel will stay at my in-laws for a few weeks until I feel that they are ready to move to their new home. My in-laws have been feeding and wateing them as I moved things over from one place to the new one but seeing as Addie is a nest hider no one has any idea when she actually had the babies. But will let everyone know how many she has in a couple of weeks. Still waiting on Twilight and Midnight to have their litters but they have a couple of weeks yet Dani Marshall Kansas
