Amorous Hog, - 2008/03/24 16:09
I have an umm... embarrassing situation that I've never come across before. Lately my hedgehog, he has been VERY in the "mood for love" (I am NOT supplying the details but you get the idea). I was wondering if I should ignore it and it'll pass or do I need to find him a girlfriend? I personally don't want to breed hedgehogs but maybe someone else would want to 'borrow' him to further their family tree? Do people do this for their hedgehogs? Like HedgehogMatch.com or is it best left alone. Is there a way to discourage it or is it pointless?
He just turned five months old and is as healthy as a horse. He gets plenty of exercise and attention.

Sara, No you don't need to get him a girlfriend but you may want to post where you are at and his pedrigree and perhaps someone will want to use him for a stud. If not you can just leave him alone and give him baths as needed.

I don't recommend having him mate. Male hedgehogs who become studs tend to lose interest in human contact, making them not the friendliest of pets.

Thanks Stasi, that's exactly what I was afraid of but I forgot to ask! So he will not be getting a girlfriend anytime soon. He is very sweet and a great pet and I want to keep it that way. He is pedigreed but I got him to be a pet not a breeder.
LORI611: Cold shower! haha! He will just have to get used to lots of wheeling and spot baths.

Well, this is all news to me....I guess at some point this may be an issue with Spikey. I also want Spikey as a pet and to keep his current personality.
I LOVE your pictures of your hedgie. He is totally cute.

All my males that I've ever had have always been very private about it. My breeder male that I have now is the sweetest thing ever and has not lost interest in human attention at all. And, just so you know, Sarah, I know you bought Harley intending for him to be a pet only, but I'm not against you breeding him, as long as it's done responsibly. Not saying you should or shouldn't breed him, though. Because that's up to you!

I really don't want to and have no interest in breeding anything. I would NEVER be able to sell or give up the babies and my house would be over flowing with hedgehogs.
My first hedgehog was very discreet and Harley...well...is very interested
and I was wondering if letting him breed would help. It doesn't sound like it will and probably could be just a phase. If I ever change my mind of course I would consult you. I wanted to email you and ask for your opinion, but your email address is at work and I'm home waiting for some surgery. He is super cute though even when he is up to no good. And he is still very happy and healthy.
Thanks Andrea, he is adorable.
