The Babies are coming, the babies are coming - 2008/03/15 21:11
Unis - Feb. 22nd-Feb. 29th (Used to be named Starlight) (23 days since - Feb 22nd) Arya - March 1st-11th (15 days since earlies bred date)
Unis was digging around quite a bit today, she even moved her food bowl to own corner and dug next to it. And she has been digging for the past 2 days or so, a lot.. I tried to breed her earlier this week thinking it had only been a week since she had last been with Bilbo, but she charged him, and wouldn't let him near her. Then I checked my dates and saw it had been a lot longer then I thought.
Arya was bred FOR SURE, on the 11th. And she is always good about having babies, usually really early too. I'm sure Bilbo bred with her the first day he was with her too though
So I'm wondering if I should put the nest in with Unis, or wait another week.

If she delivers now at 23 days, the babies would not be large enough to survive. At 28 days gestation, the babies are about the size of a jelly bean, and I have not seen any survive birth. I have absolutely no issue with providing her with a nest box, my crew pretty much always has some form of nest area. Just don't plan on her having viable babies in the next day or two. Becca

I put in the nesting box yesterday. I was in no rush, and not worried a bit. I think we are at 34 days now (?). I need to check my dates I have written down. I gave her a bath and nice scrub today, and her nipples are showing. But last time she didn't have babies and the same thing happened, so I don't believe it guarantees anything.
Let's hope she has some babies!

Just to start off sorry if my grammar is bad I'm on an iPod Touch.
Okay yesterday both of my females had babies. It's sort of creepy since they were breed at totally different times but anyways Arya had 5 babies and Unis had only one. Now I was gone all day yesterday but I checked in on Unis in the morning and she was fine under he blanket. Now I dont think she had more and ate them because there are no remains. Should I expect more babies ? Also the one babies she has she Takes everywhere, I tried to give her a nest but she went to the litter box instead. Anyway the baby hasn't squeaked at all but its moving a little but not a ton.

It's definitely not UNcommon for a mom to eat a bunch of young and not leave any trace of them at all. If a mom is struggling, or there is something wrong with the babies, this is their way of dealing with troubles like that - taking the nutrition of their babies back in. Also, sometimes moms that are just about finished with their breeding years will have just one hoglet. It is a bit odd that she's taking it everywhere with her. If you have not done so, be sure to remove the wheel from the environment to keep baby from getting hurt.

She's pretty young. Like a little over a year?
Hmm, she definitely isn't struggling with nutrition from what I can tell.
Yes, the wheel has been gone for awhile.
Should I consider trying to give the baby to the other mother? I'm sort of worried about it.

Jacob, Could she be close to your other mother who gave birth or close to your stud? If she is close to another mother I wouldn't expect this but if she is close to your stud she may be smelling him and feel threathed. With her first litter she had 5 and she isn't quite a year yet was born May 11th 2007. All 5 made it and she did clean up her nest area there wasn't a lot of blooded bedding anywhere. I don't know about removing her baby if she is that protectived of it that might do her real harm to take it from her expectly if the baby appears to be nursing and perhaps she doesn't like the nest box have you placed other ones in there? Let me know if you want me to bring one of my over for her that she happily used last time.

Hey,
She isn't near the other mother. When I say isn't near she is about 10 feet away. The stud is about 4-6 feet away from her cage.
The nesting box is new, perhaps you would want to bring one of them over? I think we should wait a few days though, because I've been leaving her alone, and I'm not even sure if the baby is still living. She freaks out whenever I come near her. . .

What did she do with you?
Hmm..I think I'll just wait it out and see. The baby seems to be growing and doing fine. I think it might be bigger than the other babies.
Thanks

Jacob, Sorry she wouldn't let me near her or the babies with her first litter either. Glad to hear that the baby is getting big let me know if you decide to keep it or adopt it out.

I think the Baby is still good, but I try and leave her alone so it's been about 3 days since I've seen it.
I will be adopting the baby out. But I have quite a few people interested. I usually send out a mass email with pictures of babies once they are old enough, and the first people to reply saying which baby they want, get that baby. That is as long as they send the deposit - I have a guy wanting three (3) babies. Feeeew!
