Vanilla had babies!!! - 2007/03/20 10:55 well after 55 days from the last time she was exposed to the male, and hope long given up about her having them babies... she finally did! i went to feed last night and normally when i am putting food in the dish i put my hand next to the box she has and she would stick her head out and give kisses and climb into it to get cuddles and treats i was greeted with this little tiny baby being pushed into my palm. from the look of it it is about two to three days old. i put it back into the box and twice she pushed it back to me, it had a milk band so i know she had been nursing. i tried for over an hour to get her to take it back so i left it there for another hour and nothing, she wouldn't touch it. so i was worried about it getting cold so i took an extra rubbermaid container put the heating pad in it put a fleece blanket over it and laid the baby on it. and put the container back in vanilla's cage. i was up at five this morning checking on it and the baby had crawled under the fleece blanket. i fed it a little and once mom smelled the formula mix she was all about trying to get some herself... so i fed mom a little, put some on baby and then some more on mom's nose... she took the baby back!. picked it up and ran with it back to her box. now i sat and watched for a good 45 minutes and mom cleaned it and layed over it but it wouldn't nurse. the baby is really good at huffing and jumping at mom yet it won't nurse. has anyone heard of a baby rejecting it's mother? mom looks like she is trying to nurse but baby just won't do it. i have left baby with mom and there is no problems that i can hear...(baby monitor in the cage) what do i use to feed it? i had a small amount of baby formula but what i have read and those i have talked to all suggest something different. when mom was out of the box eating and i had already been 'given' the baby i took the opportunity to check for more and found four dead babies, they looked like she didn't even clean them... none of them had any marks or anything that would make me believe she hurt them. so i cleaned them out and mom went straight back in with no qualms. anyone want to tell me what i do next?
thanks everyone! oh and here's a picture

Re:Vanilla had babies!!! - 2007/03/20 15:13 I'm going to guess that the dead ones were either born dead or born first and mom didn't know how to clean them off.

As for the little one, I would try puttting it back and keeping your distance. Mom is your best bet of keeping the baby alive. Hand feeding is possible with puppy formula, and you may have a chance if the baby has been getting mom's milk foor a few days. But hand feeding is extremly difficult and you have to keep your syringe or pipette steryl or risk introducing harmful bacteria into the baby's system.

Re:Vanilla had babies!!! - 2007/03/20 17:25 just to let everyone know...
vanilla took the baby back and is nursing! things are looking up for this little one. mom still likes to share her with me everytime i go to the cage even if i just walk past on the way to the bathroom she pulls it out for me to see. it's like she's showing off what she has done. and it earns her an extra meal worm so far. i think with the other ones that she was so over whelmed by all of it and being a first time mom didn't really know what to do with that many babies.
thanks everyone.. i will send more pictures later on....

Re:Vanilla had babies!!! - 2007/03/20 18:25 Stop walking by her cage and interrupting her. The meal worms are just encouraging her to stop doing what she is doing (nursing) and come out to see you. Right now she really needs to be in the hut with a baby attached to her nipple.

I know it's tough, but stay away. Put a blanket over her cage if you need to pass it a lot. The baby will be much bigger and healthier in the long run.

Re:Vanilla had babies!!! - 2007/03/21 06:20 Listen to Kelly. At this point mom should be spending all her time in the nest with baby with just a quick food break occasionally. If she is bringing baby out she may be stressed. Just change the food quietly and leave.
Let mom do her job
