I think my male hedgie needs some lessons! - 2005/02/24 21:15 Hey everyone,

I have been trying to breed my hedgehogs for not even a week now. And my female is experienced but my male is not.

He is like hey friend how are you. Not Hey friend want to have a lay down? How do I get him to preform or do I just leave them together for a few weeks?

I'm sure once he gets the hang of it it will be great. But it does take awhile right?

Re:I think my male hedgie needs some lessons! - 2005/02/26 00:21 If I were you, I would do some research before trying to breed and you'll find the answers there, rather than just jumping into it which it seems like you are doing.

On the articles page, there are a bunch of articles on hedgehog breeding and babies that you should take a look at.

Re:I think my male hedgie needs some lessons! - 2005/03/14 19:50 The males will usually peep when they are trying to co-erce the females into being in the mood, but these peeps can often be very soft, and if you are asleep or out of the room, you may not hear them.
If the male and female have been unsupervised for even 30 seconds together, you should assume that she is pregnant, and prepare her for a mommy cage 28 days from the first time she was left with the male unsupervised.

In another thread you mentioned that you felt people were making fun of you or not being helpful. A lot of people want to breed thinking they can make a fast buck or do not know the consequences to breeding (death of the female or the litter or both among other things). Also people tend to breed pet store animals that have no known lineage which can potential pass on genetic diseases that leaves everyone heartbroken in the end. Another problem is licensing. In my state I need a special license just to sell the hedgehogs and soon I will need to get a USDA license. These are just a few of peoples concerns. Another is the lack of vets that have actually treated hedgehogs and know what they are doing. Please do not take it personally, this is the same kind of reception people get when they post about the cute baby raccoon they found on my raccoon list. Raccoons make terrible pets for everyone but the most special of people. Back to your dilemna, there are some great articles out there as well as a few good books such as "The Hedgehog Primer" by: Antigone Means-Burleson available at www.hedgehogvalley.com that will help you out. I think that is why you were given that answer. You need to dig a little deeper. Everyone has concerns about new owners jumping into breeding. People had the same concerns about me when I started and I had to prove myself.

But I am looking into these sites and that. They are together again I hear the peeping and that. After last time I left her alone in her enclosure for 90 days and nothing happened. So hopefully better luck this time.
