Polygenetic or Recessive - 2007/01/19 10:48
Does anybody know if the pinto pattern is polygenetic or recessive?

It's most definitely NOT a recessive trait..
Whether it's polygenetic (coming from more than one source?) I am unsure.

I'm not sure of the exact definition for polygenetic, but it's outcomes are readily describable. For instance, breeding a "Salt & Pepper" with a Uber Pinto would result in babies with varying degrees of pinto-ness
Pinto X Pinto would make really AWESOME pintos!

It's a good theory...but, when playing with hedgehog color breeding, it's amazing the other factors! (like your desires)
pinto x pinto most times DOES make some nice pintos....
Uber pinto x anything generally makes pintos, but not always uber ones.
Sometimes they frustrate you, and you end up with solids....and go, huh???
Of course, if you have a pinto, and you want solids, you will ALWAYS get pintos....

Yup, exactly what Stasi just said (we're on the phone).
Chocolate is generally dominate, unless you are trying for it. In theory, the lighter colors are recessive, but I have one light girl that generally gives me a 2:1 ratio of champagne (ish) to chocolate when bred to a chocolate.
I've really quit trying to figure it out.

LOL! But seriously, genetics is key to understanding how to predictably produce hedgehogs of your color choice. Pinto X Normal should equal babies with different degrees of pinto, some with none at all. Usually it would be less pattern then the father/mother. Same thing with Pinto X Pinto should create pintos with varying degrees of pinto pattern. A few out of the bunch should be better than the best parent.
The thing is, it's a lot easier to predict the genetic outcomes of an animal that has a higher offspring rate, such as leopard geckos.
But yes, genetics is a lot of fun!

Genetics are GREAT! Except no one told the hedgehogs they are supposed to abide by them...You'll tear your hair out trying to predict what you are going to get when crossing A and B - even when you know their lineage going back 6 or 7 generations!!
Hedgehogs rock - assuming you're willing to accept the fact that they aren't going to follow the rules.
