Maine question - 2007/04/08 09:11 Ok so we all know that a lot of states do not allow hedgehogs to be owned as pets or sold. Maine has always been one of them HOWEVER, on several websites (including IHA) it has been posted that it is now LEGAL to own hedgehogs and to purchase from breeders but it is not legal for pet stores in Maine to sell them.
I can not for the life of me get anyone from Maine state offices to return my phone calls with a definitive answer.

Does anyone know the definitive answer on this question???
thanks all

Re:Maine question - 2007/04/08 11:33 Try contacting the International Hedgehog Society. They will be able to find out. I really don't know any other way except maybe a state game and wild life web site if you have one. Cyn and Hedgie Boys

Re:Maine question - 2007/04/08 13:24 Last I heard, Hedgehogs were illegal in the state of Maine. You can contact the Maine Dept of Wildlife and Inland Fisheries (the contast info is in the articles section).

I will swtart talking to some of my people in Maine and see if I can find any info. If they aren't legal, maybe we can start an initive. I have someone in Georgia wanting to start a petition and once they write it up I expect help from everyone here in getting GA people to sign it.

You could have just posted the link

Here is a list of pets that are LEGAL to keep in Maine. Hedgehogs are not on it. The last update was 3/7/06.

Re:Maine question - 2007/04/11 23:24 The first link is Brian Macnamara's hedgehog FAQ. He hasn't been active in the hedgehog community for at least 5 years. The FAQ is not updated. The date at the bottom is automatically changed to pretend it is, but it's been that way for as long as I can remember.

The 2nd link is a repost of Brian M's FAQ.

I know HHC does not have Maine listed as illegal, but until I hear it directly from a Maine official or a breeder that I trust who has heard it directly from a state official, I'm going to assume they are still illegal in Maine.

I was involved in a rescue about 4 years ago. I had to remove 2 hedgehogs from Maine and the Maine F&W officer had to give me a special permit that was only good for that day and I was told not to allow them back in the state (They weren't from me, rumor has it they were purchased at a NH pet store). He was very adamate about getting them out of the state, and he was really moody when I tried to enquire about why they were illegal.

Maine is very strict about what animals they don't allow. Do you know that Koi are illegal. I really do hope that hedgehogs are or do become legal, but I'm not going to take any chances.

Re:Maine question - 2007/04/12 06:31 There-I posted the link. Sorry I didn't have time yesterday to say what I had to say.

http://www.maine.gov/ifw/wildlife/unrestrictedspecies.htm

It says they will consider adding species to the list if a request and suffiicient documentation (whatever that means) is submitted to them by September. If they have not already considered hedgehogs, it may be worth the time to figure out what they want to add them to the list.

Re:Maine question - 2007/04/12 07:31 I actually got to speak to someone from the Wardens Dept in the state of Maine. The final word is:

- You must have a license to own a hedgehog in the state of Maine
- If you dont, the animal can be seized and the owner fined

Re:Maine question - 2007/04/12 08:48 It was the IFW department Warden's office. No she said it was for pets, educational facilities, etc. I have a potential buyer who just put in their application for a license so I will post as soon as she hears back from the state and let everyone know if she got it or not. Re:Maine question - 2007/04/12 09:04 I just called and talked with Wendy who told me they were still illegal. Then I called back and talked to another person who put me through to the Maine Wildlife Biologist, Buster Carter, and I got the real story. Here goes:

You need 2 permits to own a hedgehog in Maine. The first is an importation permit and the other is a Possession permit. There is a fee of $27 for each permit application. Mr. Carter was unclear about what the requirements are for the permit being accepted, but he did say it would be a lengthy process due to the fact that they are currently very busy updating their unrestricted species list.

The unrestricted species list can be found at;

http://www.maine.gov/ifw/wildlife/unrestrictedspecies.htm

It is currently being updated and they hope to have it finished by August. At that time, hedgehogs may or may not be on the list. They are also hoping to implement a way for people to propose that animals be added to the list (which may involve a fee).

Mr. Carter said that any hedgehog found in the state without the proper permit would be confiscated and he did not know what would happen after that. The individual owner would be fined and he did not know if the breeder would be held responsible.

To sum it all up, I'm not going to hold my breath. If someone brings me the proper paper work, I will sell them a hedgehog, but Mr. Carter was lear that the permits need to be filed and accepted before the hedgehog could be brought into the state.

--------------
Now that I thin about it, I had someone try to get a permit about a year and a half ago. I remember that they refused it and then she had a hearing schedualed, but I don't think I heard from her after that.

Re:Maine question - 2007/05/08 07:41 Hey all,
Just thought I would give you an update. After finding out the final word on the legality of hedgehogs in Maine, I contacted my potential customers from there and informed them of the need to obtain a license before I could sell to them. I actually heard back from one of them yesterday and she was able to obtain the necessary licensing. I asked her to send me a copy so I will let you all know when I do receive it. So it would seem that maybe getting a license in Maine isnt too bad after all???

Re:Maine question - 2007/05/08 09:23 Make sure she has both licenses. I believe it was a permit to own and a permit to import the hedgehog into Maine.

Re:Maine question - 2007/05/12 19:23 Well guess what I got in the mail today.....yup....my buyer was able to secure an importation and ownership license for a hedgehog in the state of Maine! I am really happy for her because she was so disappointed when I had to turn her down last litter because of the licensing issue. I am giving her first pick of the next litter Julie Pierce
